King of the Hill?
This is a major gametype in a lot of games and I was wondering if it would be a fun game to bring to armagetron? I'm pretty sure I saw Ww giving it a test awhile back. Could someone let me as well as everyone else on the forums know how it went if it did get tested? We could possibly offer up ideas to improve its gameplay if things didn't go over so well. If it wasn't tested, think we should give it a shot?

There was a test server up, dunno if it's still there.

Crazy tronners King of the Hill - testing (armagetronad://78.46.226.238:4537) (static.238.226.46.78.clients.your-server.de) running 0.2.8-sty+ct_alpha20090818 unix dedicated, url: http://www.crazy-tronners.com, Description: “King of the hill testing“
basically zones get placed randomly around the arena. If you enter it and stay in the zone by yourself for 3-5 seconds you get some points. if someone else enters the zone while you are inside of it, you go back to having 0 seconds in the zone.
I should also mention that the random location, is generated from an external script.

Re: King of the Hill?
that sounds really fun! are there any problems with it, or is there a chance of it being successful?

From the time I spent in one of the KOTH servers (not sure if it was CT's or WW's server the only problem I had was the arena was too big.ItzAcid wrote:that sounds really fun! are there any problems with it, or is there a chance of it being successful?
There is a very low chance that it will become popular atm because of the current sumo/fort surge.

Re: King of the Hill?
To me, the idea of king of the hill is very close, if not exactly like sumo. One person trying to gain all of the space and kick the others out. Sounds familiar.

No, not like fortress. Fortress is team oriented.Phytotron wrote:...or fortress.

Re: King of the Hill?
I'm actually working on a King of the Hill type server now. You can play as singles or pairs, and has all the popular Fort/Sumo physics with slight conquest rate tweaks. It's basically 4-team Fort with one zone, and it works OK so far; I just need to adjust the scores.

I've played a number of team-based King of the Hill games.

Feel free to make a better one then. Oh wait, you're allergic to zones.Phytotron wrote:I've played a number of team-based King of the Hill games.Bummer.sinewav wrote:...and has all the popular Fort/Sumo physics
Also, I seem to be having a little trouble with a map revision not loading. It's in my resources and I can load it locally, but it can't be found when connecting from the server. Hopefully I can figure out the problem soon, because this "fort variant" seems pretty fun so far.
Edit:
Code: Select all
MAP_FILE changed from Anonymous/polygon/regular/square-1.0.1.aamap.xml to turtle/classic/koth-2.aamap.xml.
Setting MAP_FILE (Group: Breaking) deviates from its default value; clients older than 0.2.8_beta3 will not be allowed in.
Re: King of the Hill?
Umm, that's normal. Only 0.2.8 clients support maps. And if you want the clients to work with a map, you have to upload it to the repository.sinewav wrote:I don't really know how that's possible. I'm going to just rename it later and see if that works.Code: Select all

Re: King of the Hill?
Why is that a bummer? I do not understand why you hate every server that dos not have 1 rubber.Phytotron wrote:I've played a number of team-based King of the Hill games.
