Van, about the "standard of fortress," you basically just rephrased what I said, so....
Eagle, the pitiful fact that the current assortment of choices in "traditional" servers has degraded into a homogeneous sludge of worthless, uncreative quasi-clones of one another does not mean that there has overall been less experimentation with them than with fortress, nor that there is less inherent potential for diverse experimentation and variety with so-called traditional servers.
And the following contention is just absurd: "the fact that many of the people that play fortress have the knowledge to develope 'spin off' servers with some kind of newer more interesting changes." What in your mind gives players who bury their heads in fortress mode some kind of special server creation prowess?
I still have no idea where either of you came up with the idea that there's a game mode called "rubber." But whatever. I won't OT/hijack this thread any further. It's nonsensical, anyway. Apologies (to myself, even) for interjecting my grumbles.

I'm not going to respond to this because doing so is pointless. I know your opinion on certain servers, and they are completly different from my own.
I wasnt saying that. What i ment was that there are quite a few people who play fortress that have the knowledge to experiment with more fortress servers. I would say there are more of these people in fortress with that knowledge then any other game mode.Phytotron wrote:And the following contention is just absurd: "the fact that many of the people that play fortress have the knowledge to develope 'spin off' servers with some kind of newer more interesting changes." Well as to the name "rubber" mode, to me that applies to any server with high rubber. Any ways what does it matter what I call it anyway? I could call "Crazy lightcycles with a long tail and high rubber in which you go fast" mode and it would still be right, because that describes the game. Actually since you have a problem with me saying rubber mode, from now on I will refer to it only as "Crazy lightcycles with a long tail and high rubber in which you go fast" mode. I like that better anyway.
And as to calling it standard fortress all I meant is that it can be easily duplicated for competions, all you have to do is add INCLUDE examples/fortress_complete.cfg into your settings_custom.cfg and you have standard fortress.

You've gone too far, turn back!
I disagree. Yes it is new, but there has been much experimentation with it. CT has their server, which is always full, sumo has come about, I think for a bit Sp had a fortress server up with higher rubber, but that didnt work out. If anything there has been more experimentation with fortress then "traditional" servers mostly due to the fact that many of the people that play fortress have the knowledge to develope "spin off" servers with some kind of newer more interesting changes[/quote]
We had a high rubber fortress up for like one night cuz our server admin set up the fortress settings but forgot to change the rubber into fortress rubber and speed and he logged off so it was up for a short time..wasn't an intentional server.
P.S. can I sign up for Germany if I'm from there and everything I just live in USA

Well, if you want to get pedantic, there are only two game modes: freestyle and last man standing.

Where is this ITW server located so we can prepare for the network latency? It doesn not seem to be online at this moment. I'd like to suggest to make maximum ping charity settings required for the participants in transatlantic matches. We know it doens't make the games completely fair, but at least it evens the odds a bit.

Thanks, more questions
What will be the server's version, and what client versions will be allowed to connect?
What will be the settings? Of special interest would be
- Winzone/Deathzone: yes/no/when?
- Holes: yes/no/size?
- rubber induced wall shrinkage, yes/no/how much?
- team management: will it be possible to "shuffle" yourself up? With /shuffle -1 or /shuffle <absolute position>?
Of course, it would be nice to know all deviations from well known "standards" in advance
The rubber induced wall shrinkage and permission to shuffle up are not included in fortress_complete.cfg. They'd need to be added:

The rubber induced wall shrinkage and permission to shuffle up are not included in fortress_complete.cfg. They'd need to be added:
Code: Select all
# Rubber induced wall shrinkage
cycle_rubber_wall_shrink 1 # full effect, like now on Bugfarm, or alternatively
cycle_rubber_wall_shrink .5 # alternative: half effect, like it was a long time on Bugfarm
cycle_rubber_wall_shrink_override 0 # allow clients older than 0.2.8.2 anyway
team_allow_shuffle_up 1 # allow shuffling to any position, not just to the outside
a) there is no game mode called rubber, and strictly speaking, also no game mode called fortress
Both are game elements that can be present or not (in all possible doses in the case of rubber), and we do have servers up for every combination. Just because nobody plays on the high rubber fotress servers and there's a crowd that does not play on low rubber regular servers doesn't mean they don't exist.
b) We don't seem to know the game mode
Looks like Ady wants to keep it a secret until the tournament starts, the server is still not up. Sort of like you don't know the weather in an outdoor sports game. Fine by me.
