Linux is confusing. Help a man out?

Post by Rai Rever Tims »

Hello tron!

I'm trying to set up a server. I managed to download the actual rpm file, but I don't use linux often (ever) and I'm running the serverbox from SSH and it's all rather confusing.

All I want to do is start the dedicated server running, set the password, give it a name, and talk_to_master. Then I can do all the fiddly bits in-game from the client.

Can anyone tell me how to do the above mentioned things?

And Z-man gave the best piece of advice ever on an unrelated discussion:

Don't silently skip steps you don't understand.

I'll look it over again, thanks for the reply.

Ah! Thanks for the advice, I found something that is probably a solution for my first problem (starting teh server to run). And thanks to Z-Man, if he will ever read this thread, for the wonderful proverb that was true in my situation.

Woohoo! So, my server is up and running. I have most of the settings right for now, such as rubber, brakes and scoring etc. My only beef is that one can grind/dig infinitely indefinitely if you tap the brakes while hitting left and right at the same time.

Seeing as this is the way most people who play on the kind of server I'm creating grind/dig/whatever_you_call_it, this might pose a problem.

I tried by adjusting the cycle_rubber, cycle_rubber_speed, and cycle_rubber_time, but it didn't really have an effect on the problem. I need a way to make the rubber deplete faster while digging/grinding, but not have it affect how fast the rubber depletes in any other situation.

Any ideas?

You are my new best friend. Unfortunately, I'm a little too sleepy to conjure up the answer for you. :( I'll revisit this after Ive had some sleep.

A larger cycle_delay would help, provided your server is the palindrome one.

Ah, so that was you? It's hard to tell these days.

I'll put it at .007, that seems to be common among other servers.

Hmm. Now I can run into a wall and just stall there forever :(

I probably could do that before, but even if I could the delay didn't affect it.

Half right :) Z-MaN wasn't me. I was Hä? and had only luck :)

If you can survive in front of a wall forever, possibly while hitting the brake, you definitely need to increase cycle_rubber_time or decrease cycle_rubber (or increase the speed). If you want to keep crazy stuff possible, just not as often in a row, increasing cycle_rubber_time is your way.

There's a couple of possibilities to let more rubber be used on wall assisted 180s I forgot to tell you about. You can increase the time between the two turns by setting CYCLE_DELAY_DOUBLEBIND_BONUS to something larger than 1. The product of this and cycle_delay will be the delay active when you turn into the same direction twice in a row. You can use CYCLE_RUBBER_DELAY and CYCLE_RUBBER_DELAY_BONUS to make wall contacts right after turns take more rubber or kill outright; I'd experiment with cycle_rubber_delay 1 and cycle_rubber_delay_bonus something very close to 0. Lastly, you can forbid doublebinding to an extend by setting DOUBLEBIND_TIME so something finite, 0.02 should enough. Beware, though, that this setting probably isn't popular at all in your target audience, so it should be used only as a last resort.

Haha, luck and timing!

Ok, I'll fool around with those commands. Thanks!

EDIT: Looks like it worked! At the cost of rubber going past faster, but that makes the server more interesting :D

Thanks again :P

Not today, and probably not earlier, either. The name was set when I started this particular installation, but the rest of the settings was at defaults, which I usually change the first time I do a right doublebind and activate the chatbot instead :) So I can't possibly have played with it for too long. I can't remember whether I used "Hä?" in another setup.

This was "ha" or it might have even been "hb". On the team opposite me, and the one match I played out we dominated the poor guy. :) I was curious because the Z-MaN character came in too, but I knew he wasn't you. ;)
