X-Prize/Scaled Composites Space Ship One

Post by n54 »

hmm if someone hasn't heard of this they might find it interesting. they recently reached an altitude of 65,000 metres (new record for a private vehicle). if you go over 80,500 metres NASA awards you astronaut status. carry two people to 100km altitude twice in two weeks and you win the X-Prize ($10 million)

the following photo of space ship one is also a link to their site:

ive been sorta following this competition since it started in 1999, the fact no one has won yet is sorta annoying, the canadian teams have some pretty sweet designs tho

yeah i saw a canadian design that looked nice

the "rumor" is that scaled composties will probably do the x-prize during this late summer but still i'm convinced burt rutan will take his time to be sure of maximum safety - after all none of the other contenderes seem anywhere close (to my knowledge none other has come to the stage where they need special status approval for manned flights from the faa or similar agencies in other countries - scaled composites has had such approval a while now and used it several times)

some of the closest contenders seem to have diverted away from the x-prize and over to unmanned commercial activities lately

edit: here's the link to the x-prize site for those interested:
http://www.xprize.org/
and also directly to the the canadian arrow contender x-prize page:
http://www.xprize.org/press/release_054.html
the canadian arrow main website:

i'm guessing they were the ones you were thinking of rudeboy - i think they will succeed as well (the more the better), after all the x-prize was just to get things started. many of the teams are doing very interesting stuff - the x-prize is a success already

*hopes to spend my retirement at the moon-earth lagrange point* (together with other normal minimum-wage pensioners of course) yeah i'm a dreamer

You just want to be stuck between two worlds, being pulled apart albeit very gently ;)
