What do you want to see here? Some more categories, forums, and mods? Hmm...

One may no longer link to an image at an off-site URL? One may still link to images in posts as such:
<snip>
So why not for an avatar?

It'd be possible for the server hosting it to track you easily. It can be used to send a huge avatar. Or a dynamic avatar like mine sometime ago, but that isn't really a problem. But the same is true for signatures, or including an external image in all posts.

Yeah, I decided against off site avatars when someone linked to a really huge one.

Well, I guess that's fair enough. I guess. :| But if you're going to restrict it like this, could you at least increase the size limit? Is 80 KB too much to ask?

(And please, Jonathan, don't reply with a comment on how one should do a better job of image compression and optimization.)

Increased the size limit to 64KB. It starts to add up...

Yeah, well, that's why photobucket-type accounts are convenient for both of us. Or were, anyway.

Not to mention paying for webspace to host my own images, when someone links to a huge image, why not just delete the image and send them a private message tank? I know you can edit peoples profile.

Because I think there are security issues linked in with having remote image hosting which I currently don't have the time exactly to ponder.

one security issue being human naïvity combined with HTTP authentication. Images on remote hosts could propt for HTTP auth. The naïve forum user, browsing the armagetron forums and being asked for a password, is likely to enter his armagetron forums password, be it only to get it out of the way.

Well, since we're now required to upload these images to the site, I'm wondering what happens with them. Are they stored (wherver) permanently or does one get automatically deleted when it is replaced? I'm not too keen on the first option.

I think they're stored, forever, but I'd be the only one that can find them.

Bump, for a new topic is unnecessary redundancy. :)

Two things. First, I try to upload an avatar but get the message:
Picture 1.png
Picture 1.png (6.88 KiB) Viewed 3429 times
It had been 64. I have all these avatars right at 64k (or between 63-64). :/

Second, I then uploaded a different avatar, but I notice this:
Picture 2.png
However, according to the Finder,
Picture 3.png
Picture 3.png (14.12 KiB) Viewed 3429 times
Eh? Anyone know?

My guess would be something with cluster size on the server. I've doubled the limit in the meantime.

I just realised that where it says "Current image," it's not giving the size of the image selected; it's telling you what the maximums are.

I uploaded lovely Lena (in tribute), as you see, which is 44KB and 160x123 pixels. However, "Current image" says 127.70 KiB (2*63.85, as you noted) and 160x160.

I don't know whether that's intended.
