Authentication

What does everyone think about some sort of authentication for armagetron, ie secure servers. This could easily (enough) be acomplised with an add-on application. Do you think this is a good idea? No more people messing up you ladder scores...

would be a great thing for the master server to handle imo (haven't seen anybody argue over first rights on names yet so it shouldnt be a prob). but it should still be possible to play as "guest" if you know what i mean (let noobs enter easily, when they get hooked they'll want registration anyways).

since its gnu gpl it should be using a secure transfer protocol from the start, and to avoid ppl setting up servers to siphon player credentials the master server should handle the logging part... this requires a beefed up master server w/beefed connection as well thou. this could happen, one can donate to specific sourceforge projects soon so maybe Z-man will sign up for it...

well i guess you would lose them but maybe just a program taht makes sure there are no duplicate names rather than authentication

my 2 cents:

ppl should still be able to log on with new names seperately with a "guest" option (authentication shouldn't exclude non-authentication, just preserve the name integrity for those registered)

there is already code in the source for name/password !

it seems to be linked to 1 specific german server but this could easy be altered for general use
