Armagetron support for xfire

Post by qutorial »

Hey everybody. I play quite a few games (including HL2, America's Army, Counter Strike, Garry's mod, etc), and I use Xfire to join games with friends. If you know what Xfire is, then I want to request that you send them an email asking them to support Armagetron with in game messaging and all the other features that Xfire has. In case you don't know what Xfire is, go here:

http://www.xfire.com

It is a free instant messaging system and server and file browser for virtually all games that are released today, and it allows you to join any games your buddies are in with one click (assuming, of course, that you have the game). If you don't have it, I would suggest downloading it, especially if you would consider yourself a gamer. Anyway, I just wanted as many people as I could get from this forum to email xfire at this email address:

newgames@xfire.com

and tell them to add support for Armagetron to their service. Besides the added convenience to everyone who already plays Armagetron AD, I'm sure it would attract new people as well. I have already sent them an email, and would appreciate it if you would do the same. Post if you did, and thank you.

Edit: link to the armagetron page ( http://armagetron.sourceforge.net/ ) if you do email them. Thanks.

If I remember correctly.........Arma already has ingame messaging and a server browser that shows you whos in what server.

I know I hate it when I get an IM from someone when I'm tryin to play arma.

Just my thoughts, If you like it better then use it......... 8)

I did contact them already, as I said above. I was asking more people to so that Xfire would support the game. And about the messaging thing, it isn't invasive at all like AIM is. Xfire is an instant messaging service specifically for games. It doesn't work for just armagetron, it works for almost any video game released, like halo pc, half life 2, counter strike, America's army, etc. It allows you to have a buddy list system so that you can join a buddy's server in a single click, and it works for any game you have. Basically, it is a centralized buddy system for all your video games, so that you don't have to have multiple ones for every game, so it is very convenient. You can also store all your favorite servers for every game you play in xfire. The messaging system is designed for gamers, so it isn't invasive; if you are messaged in game, a small box will pop up in the bottom right hand corner that lets you see what someone has messaged you, without intruding, minimizing your game or interrupting, and it allows you to message back without minimizing or exiting your game. It isn't another form of in game messaging either, it allows people who are playing other games or surfing the net or doing whatever else on their computer to message you. It is a very convenient tool for anyone who has multiple games and wants a buddy list, favorite server list, game file browsing for every one of them in a seamless package. But, like my first post implies, I didn't really want to debate Xfire, because I (and more than 2 million other people) already use it every day, I just thought I could get some people from the Armagetron forums to email xfire requesting support for Armagetron, so that they would support it.

Um, yeah. Wouldn't we need to put support for it in the game itself?

Armagetron is cross-platform. If a solution is made for the game to start when you click a link (armagetronad:server or armagetronad://server) it would need to work on Windows, Macintosh, and *nix.

Edit: Well, the implementations could be different for each platform, but that sounds like a PITA.

Very true..What's amazing is that it came with my Linux installation. :o

(That was about 7 years ago, oh yes, I've been playing much longer than you can imagine! 8) )

Looks like a useful system. However, they don't say a word about how it works or how you can get your game supported on the website. This leaves a lot up to speculation.
- It's only Windows. If modifications to servers are required that only work on Windows, it's out. Most AA servers run on Unix machines. Of course, the same applies to many other games, so I suppose they solved this problem.
- It may require client changes. If so, they are probably in the form of linking in a precompiled library they supply. Then it's out, too, because such a thing is not allowed under the GPL. Another similar system, the All Seeing Eye, can't be supported my us precisely because it requires a closed source module to be linked to the server.

However, the way I think this works is this: No client or server manipulation is required for the IM stuff. They start the game in a wrapper that filters input to the program and graphics output from the program. They add their IM UI stuff and catch the input they need for it. I don't see another way they could possibly support that many games.
But, how does their server browser work? There is no common server browser protocol in existence, they need special code for each game. That may just be a killer argument for them not to support AA, it just may not pay off to code support for that for a small game like ours. But it's worth a try.
