questions about hardware and server setup options.

Post by Seeker »

Some may remember that I was running a server for a lil while back with the ~0.2.6 release i think , and playing with a client on the same machine at the same time. I now want to set up a new dedicated server box, but.......

Heres what I want to do. I want to run 2 instances of the dedicated server on one machine.

vvvvvvvvvvvvvvvv important vvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvv

I DON'T WANT TO SPEND MY ENTIRE CHRISTMAS BONUS!!

^^^^^^^^^^^^^ important ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

My home network is mostly wireless with my router ( also has a 4 port 10/100 switch built in) in my livingroom on top of my entertainment center.

1) Has anyone setup and run a server with 16 clients connected and had good results with a wireless home network.

If I need to go wired, I will have to build a very small server ( extra $$$ out of my pocket) and integrate it into my entertainment center stack of components. (My wife will frown upon a big noisey server siting in my livingroom when we are watching a movie) In the case of a small formfactor pc, I will probably use a VIA nano-ITX or mini-ITX board.

2) What kind of processor usage would 2 or 3 dedicated servers running on a single machine generate on a 1.0 ghz system?

3) Has anyone built a system with a nano or mini ITX board before to use as a server.

4) Whats the minimum system specs. anyone has used to host a server with no complaints about lag or crashes.

I think thats all for now. I am already playing with a server on my network to tweak the game settings for when I build a system to host the internet games. I want to get somthing up and running soon.

BTW........Its nice to be back on the grid with you all.

Ok, my lag complaints I have always attributed to other services running on that machine. We'll see what happens this weekend when I get the game server running on the same old box again, but without the mail and web servers.

Ok, memory isn't a big deal. Minimum requirements for your OS are what you need, and no more.

For performance, in the 0.2.8 branch you can set a framerate for the simulation, so you can reduce the framerate as needed to support more servers. (This is different from the past versions where the server would take up as much available CPU as it could)

I figure a 1ghz processor should be able to smoothly run 2-3 servers. Probably even more, the limitation is bandwidth. :)

On your wireless network, the question is "Does your wireless network have more bandwidth than your ISP gives you?" If so, then you can use your wireless network just fine. My wireless network has more bandwidth than my ISP gives me. :) When connecting to my server from the same computer on the LAN, my pings are comparable regardless of which method I use.

So, how much bandwidth do you have? My servers have always been limited to 8 players because one process couldn't handle more than 8 players. z-man gave some math in another thread, hopefully someone will dig up that thread and copy the math into the wiki. For that matter, the answer to your post needs to be in the wiki. ;)

And for the settings, I'll be digging this weekend for various things, I'll see if I can find a copy of the last settings for Breakfast in Hell that I can send you.

Thanks lucifer.....

My ISP gives me 960kb up/down SDSL....not too bad. I figure my wireless network is good for 11mb/s minimum (more if I go to g all around, which it is as of tonight :) ) Hope you can find those old Hell settings, I would like to start with those as a base for my first server.
