Lag

Post by Fonkay »

Before I get a bunch of people yelling "stfu about lag" or "If you don't want lag, don't play on the internet" I'd like to say this is a serious question.

I've been getting excessive lag lately. I have never had a problem with lag before, and I'm not one to complain, but this has gotten to a point that I can barely play.

My ping hasn't changed (about 70-100 in most of the servers I play in), my fps hasn't changed (anywhere from 150-600, but mostly around 300). I haven't changed anything on my computer. But for some reason over the last few days, I've had a lot of jumpy play, and a huge case of lag issues.

I will hit the key to turn, but I will jump about one grid square forward and then turn in a warped like fashion. This is especially apparent in Fortress, but also in all the other servers.

Any suggestions? Or should I just figured out how to do one of those recording things, and then ask again?

What client versions do you guys/gals use? If it's beta3, then it is the client timer syncing bug I'm just investigating. It makes your local time go late, so your position always is behind the position on the server. Hence the jump forward as soon as you turn. I already have good recordings for that.

It also depends on the server version because different servers send timer sync messages in a different pattern at the start of the round.

I use beta3 but for me the most sufficient beta version was beta1...I'm going to start using it now. It gives me the least lag...I guess since beta3 is 3 steps higher than 2.7.1 it makes it somehow laggier on servers that are not running a beta version. I remember the speeders server was beta1 or 2 for a while and there was no lag whatsoever...That's when you really can say "stfu about lag" :D

Revan: Hmm, apart from the timer bug, there should be no more lag in beta3 than in beta1. The version difference to 0.2.7.1 should not matter. All provided I did my job of keeping the physics compatible.

I think the quantum idea is better because at least its possible to build it right now with todays technology

But it can only serve encryption, it can't do real superluminal information transfer. There is a faster-than-light effect in the formalism of quantum mechanics, but it can't be used for transmission. The same goes for quantum tunneling; it looks like it is faster-than-light, but it really is not. A warped space time really is our only hope for worldwide zero lag gameplay :)

Why not just use hypnotism to make everybody think there's no lag? That makes the problem go away too....

Har. I put "lag is a myth" in my insta-chats a handful of days ago.

It's not a figment of my imagination.

I went back to beta2 last night and I dont see nay lag problems I saw in beta3 so it has to do with the client IMO

Hmmm, why don't we throw some satellites up in orbit to take advantage of the frame-dragging effect of the earth's gravity field? Then route all our packets through that area. Or am I backwards and it would actually increase the distance?

Failing that, we could just stick some lasers on a few sharks and have them swim around relaying packets. It wouldn't help lag, but it would be frickin' cool.
