Descent Prequel
Descent Prequel
If any of you have an interest in supporting a prequel to the Descent series made by top game designers, here is a link to the kickstarter:
Descent Studios
I still play Descent regularly since installing the shareware version via 3.5" floppy disks back in 1995.

Re: Descent Prequel
I was thinking the movies when you posted this. A little disappointed.
Re: Descent Prequel
I was thinking of the book. The book is greater than the movie. The game is good though too, and im glad they are making another.

I guess you missed my post here!

I certainly did! I haven't been reading these forums much.Phytotron wrote:I guess you missed my post here!
To follow up on this Descent reboot, the Kickstarter was not looking good in the last days of the campaign, so I decided to pledge a sizable amount because I didn't think they would actually reach the goal. I was gambling — and lost because they pulled it off with less than three hours left in the campaign. Cripes, I don't (and won't) have a computer fast enough to play this game anytime in the next couple years. I totally wasted money, haha. Oh well.

Re: Descent Prequel
Not really. You helped make it possible for a lot of other people to play, and if and when you do get a PC capable of playing it, it'll be there waiting for you. ('Course, it remains to be seen whether it'll actually be good.)sinewav wrote:I totally wasted money, haha. Oh well.
Re: Descent Prequel
Hi, I'm advertising another project in the Really General section of this forum!
So, I started this thread because there was a Descent prequel in the works. That project turned out to be... just Ok. The company has the rights to the Descent trademark plus some support of a couple old-time players, but that's where it ends. The feel is all wrong. However...
The creators of the original game are making a remake called OVERLOAD and I haven't been this excited about a game in years. I wish I could get my money back from Descent Studios and put it toward Overload, but that is not possible. I'm hoping I get paid from one of my freelance gigs before the Kickstarter is up so I can up my pledge.
Man, I love flying around shooting robots with lasers.

I've never played the original but the game looks neat. The change in graphics quality was amusing to see. Man, we take a lot of things for granted. I think I'm more impressed by the graphics improvement than the concept of the game.
It looks like it would be fun to play for short periods of time, but nothing that could hold my attention for much longer than an hour or two.

That's the same thing I said about Tomb Raider but somehow managed to finish the first two installments. Imagine how many people look at Arma and think "what, you just go left and right? why would I play this?" and yet some of us have thousands of hours logged in this game.Ratchet wrote:It looks like it would be fun to play for short periods of time, but nothing that could hold my attention for much longer than an hour or two.
Actually, it's actually the perfect game for "short periods of time." If I've got 10-20 minutes to kill I can burn through a level then get on with my work.* The best part about the original series is the community of level designers (myself included). There are literally hundreds, maybe thousands of levels available for the first three Descent games. I imagine Overload will be the same and I'll be playing it for another 20 years, heh.
* There was one boss level in Descent II that was so hard I played it for two days straight until I beat it. God I hated that.

Man, I feel like Descent would be amazing on something like this. Replace the wheel with some joysticks and bam.

Re: Descent Prequel
This is my last post promoting this other game. They released a playable teaser so backers can get a feel for how the game works: Win64-bit. It's a pretty cool idea and I hope it pays off.
Ok I'm done. Sorry to spam but it's my favorite game next to Armagetron.

Re: Descent Prequel
Not a huge fan of the original games, they gave me knotted fingers and brains for lack of a good way to map forward/backward/up/down sensibly. But now we have dual analogue stick controllers and that demo was proper fun. Backed. Err, pledged. Fingers crossed.

I'm going to up my pledge tomorrow morning.Z-Man wrote:But now we have dual analogue stick controllers and that demo was proper fun.
HEY Z-MAN I HAVE A QUESTION!
My computer is too old to play the Overload teaser. I'm saving money for a new system, but I'm really thinking I want to try putting together a Ubuntu gaming laptop. Any experience with such things? I imagine the solution revolves around video card support. Is Nvidia still the best option?
