I was playing a bit with CGI and came up with a program that draws a bunch of random line segments and outputs a PNG.
It is reachable over the internet, but I don't feel comfortable with spreading my IP, so I'll upload one result.
Would be useful for map previews by the server via a POST form.

They're simply antialiased line segments, nothing special.

I decided to give it a try!
Edit: I could have used an alpha channel, but AFAIK blending is usually done in screen gamma which is (relatively) ugly.

Note that it shows how the sun lights our planet, centered at 0 lat and lon.

Load is very acceptable. I don't even notice while playing AA.
