Windows help

Post by Bytes »

Hey guys, having moved from a linux laptop to win 8 one, it's a bit of a shock to find I need such things as admin rights!
Trying to save an autoexec.cfg file in from notepad but it won't let me, how do I get round this?

when you go to edit the autoexec.cfg file, right click and "run as administrator"

I think I could edit it, but the problem is I can get the file in there in the first place, I think.

Right click "notepad" and run that as administrator, in the first place. If no1 resolves this, i have a windows 8 laptop in the house somewhere, i'll check for you.....

Where are you trying to save this file at, Bytes? The AppData folder shouldn't be protected by admin rights.

Your tron settings *should* be in C:/Users/Name/AppData/Roaming/Var

To see the "AppData" folder, ensure that you have hidden folders set to "show" by clicking on Organize --> folder and search options --> show hidden files and folders.

In that folder, you should be able to create/edit files without admin rights.

EDIT: if all of this still fails, and is no use to you, there is also the ability to directly edit folder privileges by right-clicking it and going to "properties". Then, click the "security" tab at the top. There, you can edit the permissions directly.

(This is all assuming that Windows 8 is remotely close to other versions of Windows.)

Ah, yes. I was trying to put it in the program files folder. That should work, thanks!

Yeah. That's the only place "Admin rights" should ever be a problem when editing/creating files. The C:/* folders are usually protected for security. To be honest, I had a feeling you were trying program files. Should have said that from the start. :P

There is no reason for tron to require admin rights to edit the current users config, I would advise you file a bug. Unfortunately, they ignore bugs.

It does not. Some people just give bad advice. I will usually go about and correct that, but that had already happened here.

My "C:/Users/Name/AppData/Roaming/Var" is admin protected, but only if I try to "save" or "save as" a file to it.
I can copy or move files to it no problem without admin rights.
Why's that?

Sorry I'm bring up old threads, just been looking through some things.

"Name" being YOUR username? Then it really, really should not be admin protected. Hidden, yes, but not protected.

Yes, "Name" being my name.
I just tested it, trying to "save as" a file I called "test.cfg", and it wouldn't let me, but it would let me save it to my desktop and then copy it over, and move it over.
I know, it doesn't make sense to me either. :?
Just one of those things I guess.
