Moviepacks on Ubuntu - how to install?
Hi, I've got Armagetron Advanced running on Ubuntu Hoary. I installed it with aptitude, I've got the "armagetronad" and "armagetronad-common" packages installed.
I have enabled the "moviepack on" option on the menu, but the moviepack is not appearing anywhere. I think I have to install it manually by donwloading the zip file, but I don't know where to extract it to.
Also, on Iceman's site there are lots of different moviepacks. How do I install them on Ubuntu?

Thanks!
OK, it worked. The folder where the game is installed on my machine is /usr/share/games/armagetronad
Now let's try those other moviepacks by Iceman...

Re: Moviepacks on Ubuntu - how to install?
Hello all, just discovered this awesome game and have been having trouble installing the movie packs. I searched and found this thread (aren't you proud of me for not starting a new one!) but my answer is not here.
Like the OP I have Ubuntu. I can locate the game file at usr/share/games/armagetronad, but whenever I try to place the movie packs within it says I do not have the proper permissions. I looked under the properties and the owner of the file is "root".
What to do?!!!! Any and all help is greatly appreciated!
*edit*
Also, I am new to Ubuntu as well. So you may have to speak to me like I am a fifth grader, because I am still getting used to this OS.

not really sure if this is helpful for Ubuntu users by now, but check the relevant wiki article:

Thanks for the response word. But yeah that is what I was using as a guide to help me along.Word wrote:not really sure if this is helpful for Ubuntu users by now, but check the relevant wiki article:

One thing I do not understand is where it says this:
This is all greek to me, like I said (in the edit) of my first post I am new as well to Ubuntu (sick of Windows) so I am still trying to learn the Terminal and all that jazz. Is that a terminal command, the bolded bit?Default Armagetron Advanced User Data Folder for user specific installation (recommended)
Note that you have to enable viewing hidden files to see some directories.
For all systems, unpacking the moviepack so that it sits as a 'moviepack' folder inside the user data folder works.
Unix/Linux: ~/.armagetronad
Re: Moviepacks on Ubuntu - how to install?
I'm not a Linux user, but according to Google's autocompletion everything that starts with ~/. is probably a command. however, all the other items in that list are directories. The one for Windows is hidden as well, last time I checked, but there you have to put the moviepack in the same folder as the executable.
(sorry for editing this, I needed some time to figure that out as well)

Re: Moviepacks on Ubuntu - how to install?
Yeah, I opened Terminal and typed that in and it said ".armagetronad is a directory" and that was it.Word wrote:I'm not a Linux user, but according to Google's autocompletion everything that starts with ~/. is probably a command.

Re: Moviepacks on Ubuntu - how to install?
Okay so I did some Googling and found out that I can get around the "root" by using sudo in Terminal, but I need to know the commands.
Thanks for your help Word, but it seems I am going to need some help from some Ubuntu people at this point. I will check their forums and see what I can come up with and check back on these and see if any Ubuntu users have commented.

I'd just wait here, the developers are Linux users as well. And you're welcome

Re: Moviepacks on Ubuntu - how to install?
Ok Ubuntu user, the first thing you want to do is forget about the command line. You don't need it.
1. Open Nautilus, your file browser.
2. Go to your home/user directory (should be the default location) then choose "view" then "show hidden files" (or press ctrl+h).
3. Now look for the folder ".armagetron" (Note, hidden files are preceded with a dot).
4. Open the folder and create a new folder named "moviepack" then copy the files from the moviepack you want to install into this directory.
5. Win.

I strongly suggest you to read an introduction to Linux users and files. You dont have to go too deep.
There's a difference between knowing your shit, and knowing you're shit. Grammar does matter.
