Bounty: Zones v2 CTF and 0.4

Post by Luke-Jr »

Ok, so the company I do most of my work for might be going out of business... or might not, I don't really know all the details. In any case, they've been having difficulty paying me for my work. So I figure this is a pretty good time to see if Armagetron is a good enough game that I can earn a living doing just development... ;)

My offer is this: if people can commit to at least the $2000 minimum I will need for July expenses (rent, food, etc), I will set time aside to guarantee finishing the Zones V2 port of at least CTF (and probably other sty features). If commitments reach $3000, I will guarantee the complete "sty" featureset, OR a working 0.4 final release (obviously subject to z-man/Tank's approval, but I can make something usable at least). If the goals are not reached (that is, if people don't commit to at least $2000), nobody will pay anything.

A bonus discount/offer for those interested in my hosting: For every dollar you commit toward the bounty, I will double hosting payments up to that amount. So if you put $5 toward the bounty and you have/want hosting with Lightfoot, your next $5 of payments are doubled and credited to your hosting account as $10. If you put $50 toward the bounty, that's up to $50 off hosting! (I reserve the right to expire double-credits after a full year of non-use-- but if you're using them, I promise they won't expire). For the record, Lightfoot Hosting has been in business for almost 4 years now (since 2006), so it's proven to not be going away on a whim :)

I'll wait to see the level of interest (see poll) before setting up a formal webapp to commit to the bounty. Feel free to ask questions.

Can you direct me to info on this Zones v2 CTF thing? I honestly don't really care much about sty/CTF though.

I'd contribute monetarily to the completion of 0.4 if I knew what the hell is going to be improved/changed/altered etc.

interesting request :)

contrasts nicely with what i thought could happen were we following the tronic progression

you're asking for something right now to produce a result over the next few months...
the tronic progression was suggesting we lower the barrier to entry
and from the huge numbers of teams (including schools etc)
you and the other developers get paid retrospectively every time a tronic cup is hosted

i'm not interested in the details of some kind of crappy small-game deal
but a little more info on what 0.4 might be...
hold the line

I would definitely contribute. Particularly in light of the Lightfoot Hosting offer. With that, I would buy some hosting as well.
Armagetron: It's a video game that people should just play and enjoy :)

Basically it would be a proper CTF (with smooth flag movement and optionally *looking like* flags, etc) based on the new Zones V2 framework (which admits for arbitrary polygonal shaped zones, and replaces the old Zones V1 system). I suppose it isn't necessary to 0.4, but it's a feature many people have wanted for a long time (since before pig's hack, even).

Until someone opens a tournament that doesn't fund development, but has better prises or lower entry fees? The problem with trying to fund development with after-the-fact services based on it is that someone can always do it cheaper by cutting the development costs out. ;)

can you also start to collect donations? you could put the paypal link on the main site and make it easier to find.

Just to be clear, the PayPal donation link that I think exists somewhere goes straight to Tank Program which he uses for the domain name and (crappy) Dreamhost webhosting, and is unrelated to the bounty mentioned herein.

i would like to know, before paying anything, what the full feature set of sty would include (i would like to know for .4 aswell), and i would like to know how exactly it would benifit use to put forward 3k to it? what would be the diferances, benifits, features, etc., etc., etc.?

Every feature that is part of the 0.2.8-sty branch:
- CTF (already covered by $2000 bounty)
- soccer/styball
- Hold The Flag
- shooting
- "self destruct"
- zombies
(If I'm missing anything, let me know and I'll add it)

Any hacky things will of course be fixed to work sanely:
- Flags will follow cycles properly
- Balls/flags/shots will optionally look like what they are (rather than mere zones)
- Commands ("drop" (flag), and "shoot") will have their own key bindings
- Shooting will be able to share the brake reservoir or have its own reservoir

As for finishing 0.4, that would of course include merging the new CTF into trunk, and also what us developers term "release management": basically, running the codebase through the beta/RC process, fixing up bugs that people find, and eventually releasing a stable 0.4.0 version. I know sound is currently a mess, and I might end up outsourcing/paying Lucifer some part of the bounty to fix it up rather than spend the time myself since he knows it better.

Clarification: Doubled Lightfoot payments apply to Armagetron-related products (Armagetron hosting, managed Armagetron addon to VPS, and Armagetron control panel). I will consider applying it to other hosting services (raw VPS costs, for example) on a case-by-case basis depending on what I can afford.

I don't think that's even on the radar yet ... but I guess if there's more interest in that than CTF, heck, why not? :P

Well I would rather see voice chat then an advancement for an insignificant game mode- CTF.

Well, I like CTF... but anyway, here's a poll to show interest in voice chat...
