One of the "Arma parlour tricks" I've been doing for years is to make a spiral out of those little boxes. Is that what he was doing?
Here are a few a quick examples. In screenshot_2, the tail had begun to recede at the start of it. It's also a little sloppy due to me muscles and ligaments wearing out. The other two I left more spaced, so the spiral could be more easily made out. Screenshot_5 shows my cycle about to crash—that spot is the end/exit of the spiral.
I imagine this would be much simpler (and less manually exhausting) by using triple binding. But of course, that's the cheap and easy way out.
