Codename Poll Finals

Post by Z-Man »

The first three polls gave the following result:
The Gods had the absolute highest number of votes before the voting policy was changed.
The Gems and Transformers are now the top voted items in their respective polls.
The Microbes managed to pull equal to the Gods on their poll.

Examples for Gods:
Apollo, Hermes, Thor, Odin, Aphrodite, Zeus, Poseidon, Hades, Arthemis.

http://www.hol.gr/greece/ancgods.htm

Examples for Gems:
Ruby, Amethyst, Sapphire, Jade, Onyx, Larimar, Emerald, Topaz.
http://www.tradeshop.com/gems/rainbow.html

Examples for Transformers:
http://usuarios.lycos.es/TransformersMegaWeb/Robots/

Examples for Microbes:
I'm not too strong with biology, I know only some general categories and well known specimen:
Virus, Bacterium, Plancton, Fungus, Pantoffeltierchen ( Slipper animal? Scientific name is Paramecium ), Yeast, Amoeba, E. coli.
And if it may be a bit less microscopic (multicellular), I can offer
Sponge and Polyp.
I did not find a good comprehensive list online.

This poll runs for one week.

Here is a better link of Transformers:

Here are some examples of Transformers (Autobots vs Decepticon):
Rodimus Prime, Optimus Prime, Inferno, Galvatron, Trypticon, Cyclonus, Vortex, Octane, Erector, Bludgeon, Octopunch, Grimlock, Starscream, ...

And we can continue with Beast Wars Transformers (Maximals vs Predacons):
Optimus Primal, Tigatron, Terragator, Transquito, Fractyl, Packrat, ...

I used to play with them and watch the cartoon of the Transformers :)

However, I voted gems, I think that's more known so everybody would know what you are talking about...

Zman, Pantoffeltierchen is Pantoffel diertjes in Dutch, which also means little slipper animals...

Looks like the gods won. Do the gem voters demand a runoff in case the second favorite option for the microbe and transformer fans would be gems? (I'd really hate to test philippe's patience any more...)

And do the God fans want a separate poll as to which Gods we'd take first or if the order Greek-Norse-Roman is fine?
(Norse between the to ancients because the Greek and Roman gods are so similar in nature, Greeks first because they came first)?

I think we should try to pick names that will be expressive of what's planned. :) For example, let's say we planned to make a release that would send a message to the world that Armagetron is the greatest game ever, we could call that one "Mercury". If we made a release that invited love and togetherness (for example a first release that allows servers to trust other servers' authentication and userbase), we might call that one Gaia. Later on, when we make a release that we expect to engage the world in a competitive fashion, we might call that one Mars or Thor, or something like that. And of course, the release where we expect to make a lot of converts and rule the world should be called Yahweh.

:)

Otherwise, in an alphabetical list I'd favor pantheons that have gods for a given letter over pantheons that lack a god for that letter.

I got the following from philippeqc because his X is busted up...
philippeqc wrote:As the gods seems to have won, I've wipped out the following. if you have a better list, feel free to post it. Also, aadvark could be item 0 on the list. But unless there is any strong opposition, I propose we just move along other topics.
--------

taken from www.loggia.com/myth/gods.html
and http://www.godchecker.com/pantheon/nors ... ?_god-list

Legend (See the first link for details concerning to the 4 first items):
O - Olympians
T - Titans
C - Chthonic
F - Free spirits
N - Norse

Methodology:
- I tried to populate the list in the order presented in the
legend. But not always.
- No cheating (to my knowledge), so no Saturne AND Zeus or double usage of
the same figure
- When multiple choice where possible, instead of being lame for
picking the most popular god, I decided to be lame by picking a
more obscure one and letting people complain about it, not
realising the first point. ;)

(*)

A - [O] Artemis was the Mistress of Beasts and all things wild.
B - [O] Dionysos (Bacchus) | god of wine, mysteries, and the theatre
C - [T] Kronos (Cronus) | it was Kronos, son of Gaia and Ouranos, who castrated his father; in turn, Kronos was the sire of many of the Olympians
D - [O] Demeter, the goddess of agriculture and fertility.
E - [T] Epimetheus | this Titan was the brother of Prometheus; his name means "afterthought"
F - [C] Erinyes (Furiae) | also known as Furies, these were female spirits who exacted vengeance against those who committed specific crimes
G - [T] Gaia (Tellus) | Gaia was an Earth goddess; she is also the mother of the Titans
H - [C] Hades was the god of the underworld.
I - [T] Iapetos | god who fathered Atlas, Prometheus, and Epimetheus
J - [O] Hera (Juno) | goddess of marriage; consort of Zeus
K - [T] Koios | god who mated with Phoebe and together they produced Leto and Asteria
L - [T] Leto (Latona) | the goddess Leto bore the Olympian deities Artemis and Apollo to Zeus
M - [O] Ares (Mars): God of war
N - [O] Poseidon (Neptune) | god of the sea and earthquakes
O - [T] Okeanos (Oceanus) | god of the Ocean and water; father of the Oceanids ("three thousand slender-ankled daughters")
P - [T] Prometheus | the name of this Titan means "forethought"; in myth, Prometheus was punished for giving fire to humans - he was bound, and daily an eagle would devour his liver
Q - ** BLANK **
R - [T] Rheia (Rhea) | Rheia was a mother goddess who bore the deities Hestia, Demeter, Hera, Hades, Poseidon, and Zeus to Kronos
S - [F] Selene (Luna) | goddess of the moon
T - [C] Thanatos | god of death
U - [T] Ouranos (Uranus) | Ouranos was both the son and the consort of Gaia; he was also the father of the Titans
V - [O] Hephaistos (Vulcan) | god of smiths and metal-workers
W - [N] Wodan/Woden/Wodin/Wotan | God of Wednesday, the germanic equivalent of Odin
X - ** BLANK **
Y - [N] Yggdrasil | The giant ash tree supporting the nine worlds
Z - [O] Zeus, as you have probably already guessed, was the father of the gods.

From the first link:
The Titans were a race of gods who were the parents and precursors of the Olympians. They were defeated by this younger generation of deities, who were led by Zeus. The ancient Greek poet Hesiod, in his Theogony, claims that the goddess Gaia first gave birth to Ouranos, then mated with him to produce these offspring. Later, Ouranos was to name his children Titans, which translates into overreachers.

The Chthonic deities inhabited the opposite realm from the Olympians - the Earth or the Underworld (chthon means earth in Greek). These immortals therefore acquired a slightly more dark and shadowy aspect than their bright Olympian counterparts. Nevertheless, the following gods had their place in the Greek pantheon, for they fulfilled certain fundamental needs, including providing an explanation for what happens to mortals after death.

Free Spirits mean a list of important Greek gods and goddess who
do not fit into a specific category - include the Muses, Nike,
nymphs, etc.

(*) From this point, all the text is some sort of cut and
paste. Nothing is mine.

Since Philippe apparently has invested some thought and time in collecting the list, I'd say we take it as it is.

The only question that remains, do we rename aardvark to Artemis? ;)

I'd say we keep calling it aardvark until we actually release it, then drop the codename altogether and pretend it never existed (like Microsoft always does). Just in case anyone is already excited about aardvark. Or we could say "It's spelled aardvark, but pronounced Artemis" (or the other way round) to go for maximum user confusion :)
Naa, I really don't mind. I'd let Philippe decide, all this was his idea.

Na, I dont have any preference in the matter, I just want it to be solved and done so we can move to other items. I'l cool with the "lets drop aardvark, and if someone answer, its prononced Artemis" idea. Beats my "aardvark has two a's, so lets consider it element zero" by a long advance! ;)

Actually, its Lucifer who had the idea of codenaming. I might appear very eager, but that because I wanted to see it picked and populated so I could actually start using it.

For five weeks (I migth be doing some inflation...) I've been staring at the sf.net page thinking "when will I be able to categorise this stuff" ;). So I made a list to get thigs moving. I just couldn't endure another round of voting.

Sab, you just need to wait for 24 releases now, as the list misses Q's and X's

Long live the mostly-greek-gods codename list!
