Teamspeak

Post by compguygene »

I am sure that sine.wav is not the only person with questions about teamspeak. So I started a thread here to talk about it.
Teamspeak is very easy and intuitive to setup, manage, and use. It allows you to use a variety of codecs. Codecs are the little bits of software that encode and decode your voice. If you do not choose to host your own teamspeak server. A teamspeak server can be purchased for $0.25 per slot. The choice of codec is important to balance how much bandwidth it uses vs. how much is available!

I've used teamspeak and I prefer it over skype, the only other one I've used. But which is the best, open-source cross-platform client? Cuz I think I'd like to have that one. Anyone want to pitch their favorite?

In the Wild West we have had a lot of fun and success with TeamSpeak! We used it in the last ladle.
And our CTF and CTFS teams have been using it for a while. TS allows us to react a little quicker, at times, than insta's. Plus, the whole "getting to know each other thing". That's why I would like to offer a TS public server to the Tronic Community! Those of us that actually participate in this forum, for example, could chat, in TS, about this stuff!

I guess one thing I like better about Skype is the free part. No money. No server setup even. I really should look for something that doesn't eat much CPU and bandwidth since my computer is quite old and I play on the lowest tier ISDN line my ISP offers.

Ventrillo is pretty good too.

I like that more because there is no random "PLAYER ENTERED" screaming in my ear. And I find the quality to be better.

That's good to know, i like the player entered, because it helps me keep track of things...
Usually the reason people say they don't like the quality of the sound on teamspeak has to do with the default codec. The default codec in ventrillo is similar to the better choices in TS. I haven't tested them side by side. But, since they can be set up using similar/same codecs, i suspect that differences in quality have more to do with the setup than the specific software.

Skype eats bandwidth, even if you're not the one using it ;)

Something Jingle-compatible would be nice. If enough people have free long distance, we could probably setup a free teleconference too (courtesy of Google GrandCentral :D).
