What happened?
Also, I need some help with the rubber settings. I know that the bahavior between 2.7.0 and 2.7.1 for rubber is different, that's already been established in other threads. I have the rubber set to 9 right now on my .1 server, which is pretty high for this release, yet players will die when just tapping a wall at high speeds, as if the rubber was set to 1 or so. At slower speeds, the rubber is too much. What can be adjusted to give a cushion to them when traveling at high rates of speed so that they don't die instantly?
I need help with 2.7.1
The symptoms of what I'm having problems with is this, the rubber seems to loose it's effectiveness as the speed increases, so if you're going slow you could have 1 second or so to react before crashing. As the speeds increase, your time to react decreases. I've bumped the rubber settings up to 10 for testing, and at slow speeds that's a ton. It's hardly there at all at higher speeds, which makes it inconsistent.
What should I adjust?

CYCLE_RUBBER_SPEED
I guess I forgot to follow up on this. I decided to check nemo's answer, and that's what led to Breakfast in Hell's recent settings update because as usual, I got excited and other people on the grid had good suggestions.
Anyway, the lower this number, the less effective rubber is the faster you go, it seems. Hell is currenty at 60, the default is 40.

CYCLE_RUBBER_SPEED does something different entirely
If you set it too low, approaching a wall will feel like swimming through molasses. It does not affect the rate at which rubber is used up.
Rubber used is based purely on the distance you would travel, not the time. If the rubber code decides you'll move 10 length units less than you are supposed to move by the physics, you'll use 10 rubber. Logically, if you move faster, you use more rubber per second. I see how this can be a problem for servers where the settings allow for a large variance in speeds.
Should there be a new setting to allow all kinds of speed dependent behavior?

I totally forgot about the first problem, the massive connection loss. This is exactly what I was looking for in the bughunt call for help, so this bug has not been fixed miraculously. I'll add it to the database. Damn!
