How to beat DSL while using dial-up?

Anything about how you get those awesome core-dumps, or why you don't get them...

I just got off of dial up about a month ago, and lemme tell ya man, it's rough, you gotta become one with the lag, watch the ping on the server that you are about to enter.

My advice in game, try to avoid direct action, let them come to you, avoid doing corner grinding cause you will just end up failing. The game is only playable up untill a ping of 350, if it goes any higher either have fun with it, or leave and try to reconnect to the internet, it also and go on late at night when everyone on your ISP is night, night.

hope this helps.

And don't forget, make your moves within the lag period. If we define the lag period as the period of time before a move is visible to the other player, then when you make all your moves in the lag period, the other player doesn't see them. If you make them out of the lag period then the other player sees them more or less in realtime (technically not, I know). Most players can be killed this way, including me. Many players have tactics designed to deal with this, but they're imperfect at best. Some players (usually the less experienced, or the overconfident) can be taken out at the starting line if you move in the lag.

Not that I'm on dialup, just that this is how to use lag as a weapon rather than an excuse. And really, would you rather have lag as a weapon or an excuse?

Um, yes, didn't I just describe how to use lag as an asset rather than a liability?

How on earth can I control gliches in a game!!! I can't do that!! Lag is something that just slings u around the room and kills u!!! I can't live forever! (I wish i did)

Um, no. Lag is the amount of time it takes for everyone else to see your moves, and for you to see their moves. Extreme lag carries the symptoms you've described, but that's not what lag actually is. :)

So let's say I make a move at 3:11.01pm but it takes half a second to go to the server. THEN it takes half a second for you to receive. So the server will record the move at 3:11.51pm, and since both of us are half a second away from the server, we will both see my move at 3:12.01pm. Since the server now disagrees with my client on my position, I will see my cycle slide. Now, since I know by my ping when the server will record my move, and I know by your ping when you'll *see* my move, I know that if I make a move within 600ms of your position, I can put a wall in front of you that you won't even see until after you hit it. All's I need to know is that in 600ms I can cross your path and be free, without hitting your wall (also due to lag). That's how you use the lag against people.

Now, if you're experiencing a situation where you don't ever see what's going on, and at frequent intervals you find the whole grid being completely redrawn, and you're seeing everyone traveling in a straight line for stretches followed by the whole grid being redrawn, you're experiencing packet loss. If it's because of your connection, there's only one way to fix it, which is to get a better connection. IF the other players are experiencing it as well, you can just relax. But it is possible for the server to flood your connection right now. In fact, there's a post in another thread talking about having the server work a little harder *not* to flood player's connections. There are other things that can cause packet loss, such as a lot of extra services running you don't need, viruses/worms/trojans on your machine using your internet connection at the same tmie you are, and other services using your internet connection (I get extreme lag and packet loss when my mail client downloads new mail and runs the spam filter, for example), and all sorts of other things. So first try to unblock the pipe. When you're sure the pipe's clear, then take another look at the lag situation. While people's preferences vary, I've seen excellent players kicking ass with pings up to 700, so take heart and keep at it. You'll get there.

If you can read minds, you shouldn't have any problem.

you don't really need to read other peoples minds (although it's good if you can do it *tries to remember old instant chat setting about the game being training for a secret governmental organisation using intrusive telepathy*) actually here's a bona fide tip, probably the biggest secret of the game:

<silence>

read your own mind

<more silence/>

i'm deadly serious (and yes a bit tongue in cheek too but...) it actually works pretty well, but you need to think about it a lot to reap the benefits, not just psychology, or reverse psychology, or reversed reverse psychology but deeper and all at once :D

"know thyself and you will know more about your enemy"

*does arcane zen mindmeld with the void and disappears (out of the topic)* ;)

p.s. in other words "functional insanity" can be a tactical advantage in this game, i bet all the really good players are certifiable hehe :P :oops:

You don't really need to worry about the enemy if they are worried about you ... be one with the zen of play. Lose your mind , do not think ko be san!
