I always thought it was some kind of shell. I never knew the significance, though.

someone needs to go back to sleep and then try waking up again. :star:

BTW, maji... yeah, it's part shell. but don't bother guessing "conch". this animal is in a very small group along with three other famous relatives that have the initials "O", "S" and "C". these are some of the smartest animals in nature, altho not quite as smart as the parrots, cetacians and great apes.

does that help?

Is it a type of cephalopod?
O= octopus, S= squid, C= cuttlefish

hmm are you seeing the same avatar as me?

it looks flat and pentagon-shaped to me, not like any squidlike thing at all...

btw i love vampire squids, they are the most beautiful animal ever! (the ones with red skin and blue eyes) sadly there aren't any really good pictures of them on the web, the ones below are the best i've found but still not close to their true splendor...

(here's another view)

these animals are living fossils, c. 500 million years old. they once ruled the world along
with their extinct cousins the ammonites. i'm not totally sure, but i don't think fish
had come out of the sea by then... i'm not sure fish had even evolved, period!

even so, little is known about nautili. they are prized for their large, beautiful shells,
but reproduce slowly and have been wiped out in some areas. they can't really be kept
as pets (since they deteriorate away from their habitat) and have never been successfully bred.

here's another interesting mathematical fact from dr. wood's site:

As far back as the ancient Greeks, the shell of the chambered nautilus has been a
symbol of perfection. This shell can be described mathematically as a logarithmic spiral.
It is often confused with a very specific type of logarithmic spiral that the Ancient Greeks
described. This special logarithmic spiral has a ratio of 1:1.618. and is called The Golden
Ratio or the Divine Proportion. In truth, while Nautilus is a beautiful example of a
Logarithmic spiral, it is not in the proportions of The Golden Ratio.

yes it's scientific name is Vampyroteuthis Infernalis, it is pretty amazing yes (and it's not really a squid or an octopus it's a seperate type of cephalopod - they have 8 tentacles of the normal kind + 2 specialized fully retractable ones) they are amazing and extremely beautiful (i've watched some footage on discovery a few times, sadly i've not found pictures of the same quality). they're really fast although for a long time one though they almost weren't able to move at all, they have "the opposite" of the ink-defence thingy as they use bio-luminous cells/light for defence (both covering their body and by squirting out clouds of bioluminiscent bacteria), and when they invert (turn inside out) their body and show all their "teeth" they look insanely scary in a "hungry-monster-from-outer-space" kind of way - some have described the inverted look as a "spiked volleyball"
