(here's another view)
these animals are living fossils, c. 500 million years old. they once ruled the world along
with their extinct cousins the
ammonites. i'm not totally sure, but i don't think fish
had come out of the sea by then... i'm not sure fish had even evolved, period!
even so, little is known about nautili. they are prized for their large, beautiful shells,
but reproduce slowly and have been wiped out in some areas. they can't really be kept
as pets (since they deteriorate away from their habitat) and have never been successfully bred.
here's another interesting mathematical fact from dr. wood's site:
As far back as the ancient Greeks, the shell of the chambered nautilus has been a
symbol of perfection. This shell can be described mathematically as a logarithmic spiral.
It is often confused with a very specific type of logarithmic spiral that the Ancient Greeks
described. This special logarithmic spiral has a ratio of 1:1.618. and is called The Golden
Ratio or the Divine Proportion. In truth, while Nautilus is a beautiful example of a
Logarithmic spiral, it is not in the proportions of The Golden Ratio.
