I like the idea of a yearly tournament.

Here's a thought. To build off of insa's idea of a tournament like march madness, what if we make the 12th ladle of the year (or a separate tournament altogether, idrc) into that sort of setting. Use standings based off of the yearlong results of the ladles and set a bracket up that way. By my understanding, there's usually around 15-16 teams. So maybe 4 brackets of four putting the top 4 teams in separate brackets? With seeds 1-4 and such. Might be a bit difficult to manage, but it's definitely something I'd be interested in seeing.
BRAWL dead. RIP.

Nice. I was hoping someone would suggest that. There are a number of people who complain about Ladle losing it's importance. Having an annual tournament where the year's performance becomes a factor is very interesting I think. Should that be a separate matter than a Saturday tournament?

I especially like Concord's idea of a captain's pick tournament on Saturdays. I also think there is enough interest in Saturday Fortress to do something "self-organized," if we want to take an idea from 2020. Self-appointed "team captains" can simply agree to show up in #armagetron.tourneys at 19:00 GMT and pair up with their prearranged teams or make teams on the spot. I think we can get 4 teams to show up, don't you? There are usually 3-4 teams worth of players in pick-up on Saturdays. We can even do 7v7, 8v8, 5v5, whatever. Could even call it the Spoon and do it every month.

yeah, at the designated time, anyone who wants to play shows up in the irc room. then anyone who wants to captain volunteers. If there are more captains than would be appropriate for the number, you could do co-captaincy's. Then draft. Then round-robin, if the number of teams is small, or swiss if the number is big.

Yo Noodzs, what's a good time for you if we do a Saturday tournament? Are you staying up late or getting up early for this?

I'm starting to imagine every Sunday Ladle following a Saturday Spoon that somehow utilizes pick-up servers so teams can /vote referee.

Better yet, add a !captain function that keeps track of who wants to captain. I guess co-captains could work, but I think there's too much potential for conflict with that. I would lean towards a randomizer picking between those available if there are too many.

Another thing you have to consider is subs/people not being able to stay for the entire tournament. Maybe have it the same as pickup? If you miss the opening, you can sub for the first team available that has an open spot, and if you leave abruptly (something that we'll need to clearly define), then you're banned from the next 'Spoon?'
