Hmmmm...Lucifer listens to a lot of Iron Maiden....Big surprise...At least they were able to make sense a lot of times. Just listen to the themes in "Run To The Hills". That is what White Man did, and it is a great example of what will continue to happen.

Re: Favourite Songs/Artists
Quoted for the Truth! Yeah mostly this modern generation are into this topic for music ideas. Sadly enough we have upcoming artists joining this mainstream music who might have talent but in the twist of events get sucked into this type of LOUD MUSIC > ALL, kind of idea. @ Dubs if it quacks like a duck, walks like a duck, looks like a duck. It's a duck. Regardless of how "different" they sound or as you may be saying, it is still falls in this category.Cosmic Dolphin wrote:Guys, get out of mainstream rock. Modern styles of music have lost the talent needed to write and play real music. And the themes of today's music is just Sex, Drugs and, in the metal culture, we are pathetic creatures who are going die. With Arena Rock appearing in the 70's, bands since then have just went downhill. It is all about pumping out sounds that sound good LOUD and mainstream enough no one can complain.
Move on people.

I have to ask about Mazuffer's first list. Is that stuff for real? Seriously. All these white Fins mimicking/caricaturing AAVE and hip hop culture/fashion/lingo, saying shit like "yo, representin' Helskini in da house" and whatever. What a joke. Who are they kidding? And really, it's pretty offensive on top of it. I mean, hip hop has already become the modern-day American minstrel show, but this shit takes it to new lows. All they're missing is the blackface. I showed this to a few black friends of mine and they first burst out laughing, but then commented on how disgusting it is. You need to get a clue, honkey.
For the record: Blink 182 et al: Awful, faux punk, pop, commercial dreck. It's Hanson or the Jonas Brothers with power chords.
Sinewav, amusing selection. You could've picked a less unfortunately lyric'ed Descendents song, though. (I'm compelled to ask what your interpretation of that final verse is.)

Yes it is unfortunate. But when that song came out (27 years ago), it wasn't considered much of a big deal, even to a gay friend of mine. Back then political correctness wasn't out of hand like it is today. Besides, you hear worse stuff in modern "rap" music anyway.Phytotron wrote:Sinewav, amusing selection. Re: Favourite Songs/Artists
Yeah, I was just wondering where you 'stood on it,' so to speak. I recall an interview where Milo had talked about being a stupid kid and regretting those lines, and I remember firsthand of them first sort of trying to change the lyrics—"you f'ing lame"—and later just dropping the song from their shows. And I'm talking about the late 80's. They got enough flack from their audiences; homophobia's antithetical to, whatever you want to vaguely call it, "punk ethic." There's also the interpretation that that verse was, like "Suburban Home," meant to be taking on a persona—in this case of the "bully," and those are things that would be shouted at him by insecure macho motherf'ckers. But then people didn't get that (like people not getting when Biafra's lyrics were going in and out of characters/mockery; I've run into a lot of that over the years). I can't remember if Milo addressed that. Anyway, as someone actively involved in GLBT advocacy, I had to ask.sinewav wrote:Yes it is unfortunate. Re: Favourite Songs/Artists
How many of you have sat down and listened to classical music radio station for an extended period of time? Or, listened to an old fashioned tavern band basing itself off say the 1500s? How many of you have went through your parent's record collection? And I take it all of you have listened to modern radio.
Until you explore many areas of music you can't begin to critique what music is good. And each style has it's own good points. But, I have become very annoyed with today's music scene.
I had once thought about becoming a music critic. And yes, I have listened to all the music I stated above. But, there are way too many double standards in today's music. Say, for example, a rock band who writes, performs and records all of their own music can be called "uncreative and poorly set-up." Yet, a pop singer's work can be called a masterpiece when they don't even know how to read music! See what I am getting at?
In a nutshell, expand and think critically about your music. You can find good work in today's music, but it helps to listen to older (sometimes way older) music.

Ok.
First of all, do not generalise.
I have listened to my mum's "record" collection. I have listened to classical radio for long periods of time, in fact i have classical music on my ipod. FYI I play classical flute and have been for over 11 years. So please, please, please don't lecture about expanding musical konwledge.
You need to realise that just because you personally don't agree with a certain type of music, or band, doesn't mean that your opinion is paramount. It's exactly that, an opinion. I respect yours so respect other people's.
Can we please keep all replies on topic? I don't think that's too much to ask... I don't want all out arguments on music in here. I made the thread and that's not what it was for. If you want to do that, go make your own thread. =< This was supposed to be about people's music taste; so people can share what they like. Let's not turn it into another argumentative thread =S
