Is this gonna mess up the HUD?
Not per se, the rubber you've got is still calculated and kept as up to date as it was before. The problems ishAdmin points out are due to the server not sending its current rubber to the client, so the client has to guess and it's not always accurate. And that guessing process stayed the same. I added a feature request to add this missing functionality.

So, everyone except nemo ( and the only theory I've got about the rest-stickyness is that its some bug in wall placement code and that would be too risky to fix now, sorry ) seems to be happy with RC8. I suggest that if no further problems pop up until then, we'll call it a release in 24 hours. Objections? Are the build files in such a form that we'll just have to rename them or is the release candidate version number compiled into them?
I can take care of the obnoxious file release process on Sourceforge.

I agree with releasing RC8 :D
The only file that needs renaming is the windows installer

"I have noticed something on some servers. The rubber seems to inexplicably run out suddenly. I think I have more, and then boom. It didn't happen on swampland much, but it has a rubber of 10. It seemed to happen with lower rubber servers. I would notice it most often when doing a 180 against a trail to go back down inside a tunnel. I think I have plenty of rubber for it, but I don't. "

i drive with rubber meter off & i get the same feeling, i think it is less leaniant to u-turn grinds & more nicermous to pure grinds. which is kinda fair. if you ask me. no more u-turn-for-everything wankers

Not if we can just take your rc6 build and rename it. The changes from rc6 to rc8 were minimal. One bug that never had observable consequences was fixed ( the missing null termination of strings in text input fields ), COPYING.txt was updated and the windows build was corrected. Nothing essential for the mac build.

it would save me a lot of time...

compiling in an emulator, while effective, is not really that much fun...

I think the build from rc6 is sufficient.

Ok, I have ganthered:
- unix source tarball/ windows source zip
- linux rpms and windows installers
( built by myself from rc8 source and with the internal version set to 0.2.7.1 )

- debians by klax from rc8
Do I remove the "-8" from the names before uploading them or is it an integral part of the name ( like the "-19" in the rpms )?

- max osx build from rc6 by nemostultae
As I said, rc6 should be ok for mac. Should/can I remove the rc6 from the filenames?

It's an integral part of the name like the rpms ;)

Ok, the files are uploaded to SF. I compiled some readable changelog and posted it and tested every download. Let's hope the files get to all the mirrors intact.

I'll update my freshmeat entry and finally update the old homepage at armagetron.sf.net to explain the changes to visitors.

More things to do:
- Update the linux game tome entry
- Maybe write a SF news item? I don't know if anyone watches those, though.
- Inform distributors we know of
- update/create web page

Volunteers/ideas how to do it best?

I'll merge the b0_2_7_1 branch back into the trunk so we can continue to work there. We should still concentrate on bugfixes and those small features that round things up. In my last network game, someone continuously fooled me with invisible walls. Can't tolerate that :)

I'm not easily fooled by them, but my chatbot ran into about every nearby invisible wall (last tested on the CVS version before b0_2_7_1) while it should never run toward/stop on walls unless it has no other choice. There wasn't enough time to verify the sensor values but I think they didn't detect the invisiwalls.

The rubber code ignored the invisible walls, too. So they are not only invisible, but simply not there on the client. I don't know yet if this makes looking for the cause easier or harder.

The release branch is now merged into the trunk, the old SF project has been obsoleted and links here, two SF news items have been submitted ( one for each project ), the freshmeat entry for armagetron has been moved to point to Armagetron Advanced. I also updated the Linux game tome entry ( accidentally misnamed one of the links... ). And I sent messages to the old mailing lists.
That should inform everyone who is remotely interested. I suppose distributors hook in on one of these channels.
