Open vs. Closed: Lets have it out!

Post by cetialpha »

Though I've been playing online for a while now (about 5-6months), I haven't as yet posted in the forums yet.

Oh, and let me apologize up front if this topic has already been covered here. I couldn't find it on the boards.

I've been playing in Swampland a lot where there's a large number of people who play "open". I have to admit that I was sceptical when I first encountered this style of gameplay, but it didn't take long for me to love it. I find playing "open" just opens (pardon the pun) new tactics and strategies. Don't get me wrong, playing closed is fun too, but it can get old when people constantly trap you in big boxes all the time; you end up spending all your time stalling around (camping I guess lol).

I find for servers like speeders where there's lots of rubber, closing isn't even an issue. In fact, the whole fun of those servers is navigating your way out of the tight mazes--something I really need to practice. hehe.

I was just curious to see what other people think about it. I find people are either adament "openers" or die hard closers who don't have the time of day for playing open. And to each their own. Again, Armagetron is a big enough place for everybody.

The thing I don't get is this whole "purist" ideal some people spout. My argument there is if we all played true to TRON (no rubber) closing wouldn't be even an option, or at least extremely difficult to pull off.

Let the rants begin!

Err, excuse my ignorance, but would you care to explain the difference? Does open play mean you don't grind to seal off passages? /me apparently needs to play more often again :)

Hey Z-Man. Basically open is what you said above. You're allowed to grind, but you can't close someone's path.

Again, Swampland is a server where there seems to be a lot of people who play open.

THen what's closed? Is that where you do seal off your enemy and try to kill them?

Hey Lucifer. Yeah, "closed" is where you basically seal your opponent so there's no way out. When playing "open" you allow a passage, whether large or small, for your opponent. However, you try and make it as difficult as possible for them to get out. Anyway, try it out sometime, it's fun.

Imho it's bunch of crap. But if an opponent dies on the way out, you can now say:" Why, it was open?!" ...

It's closed, then. You trapped him, you're supposed to kill him without mercy :)

It could be possible to FORCE open play on a server. It would only be required to somehow make it always easily possible to outgrind enemy players, sort of like the opposite effect of fat cycles. If it's a game rule and not some code of honor, that's acceptable for me. Oh, and such a setting would also take care of rim runners.

Forcing open play would be an interesting mod to any game play style.

It certainly would. It really would be nice to have a server that is dedicated totally to playing open, or as stated above, having open "forced". It would save from having to apologize all the time for closing by accident, and having some people in the room closing and some playing open.
