I've been playing around with this recording malarky.
I noticed that while playing back the recording, up until the time that I joined the match I was able to change players, camera, views, etc without it crashing.
It was when I tried to do this after I entered that things crashed - connection lost or somesuch.
So I entered a server in spectator mode and just made a recording.

While playing back this recording, I am able to change players, cam, glance etc, without a crash.
I did get kicked off my own server for being idle though.

Have a look. Maybe I'm missing something.

Another thing to consider is lag (and packet loss and things, which actually do add a delay; lag is just a convenient little word). When you look from someone's viewpoint you'll see truly what he saw, aside from some graphical settings. Otherwise you'll have a fairly consistent though possibly jumpy view, and an arbitrary player appearing ahead but not actually being there. Server recordings (if we ever get to visualize them) would have some usefulness because they should be the most consistent.

heheh
i wonder if that is what i really did way back when...

i can't open a rar file
and there is no one playing fortress for me to join and not play

this could be a serious breakthrough...
imagine
we could have a reporter!

actually
can you open up two programs of tron
and join the same server?
if so
one could be recording as spectator...

You can, but it destroys performance and wastes bandwidth. Better to have some sort of dedicated recorder near the server, or watchable server-generated recordings.

The server side recordings are not suited for joyful watching even when it gets technically possible; since the server's gamestate is not visualized, it is not optimized to be smoothly moving, but to yield the correct simulation results. When visualized, it will look choppy and jumpy. Ping charity also causes the cycles to be seen at positions where they really were .1 seconds or so ago.

A dedicated recording client would be a good idea, though. Just make it not open a rendering window and enter a server automatically without a player (old style specator mode). A script on the server could start a new recording client every match and kill the old one.

why not go the whole hog
and develop a server-side spectator?

that is
a server joins a game as a spectator
receives the information
and then anyone joining that server
can see what is going on in the game
manipulating their views and so on?

the server obviously records games
and players watching can too if they want

suppose there is not much need for this yet
except in competition finals
when quite a few players may actually want to see how the finalists do...

just now
it is a bit flat...
sure for the players there is a high from winning
but no-one gets to see them play
and so can't really join in with celebrations
just the a little note of thanks on a wiki page somewhere...

I'd like to give this a go. How might I go about doing it?

/me still can't make recordings. Even with a re-install unfortunately the record feature can't be found.

I tried to open up two clients, one where i was playing and one on spectator mode. The playing gets a bit laggier than normal but playable, the recording seems a bit laggier than when playing, but it's nice how you only need 1 recording to be able to see everything. Used version 0.3.0

The recording is with a bunch of good people, but it's not exceptionally good or competitive play and it's kinda short. Saw at least one nice action by someone.

one last request:
if anyone has a decent ping
could they record their game?

it would also be nice
if admin could allow one visiting spectator to record the games

the spectator must not type anything
or change views
since this will influence reviews while editing

volunteers welcome
