Sparkling New Source of Great Media from Around the World

Post by nicolas.b »

well, i suspect most people here are cool enough to already know about this stuff from long ago. but just in case, i originally posted this at VPF:

-------------------------------------------------------

first of all, this stuff is not really new. let me clarify: i'm simply an idiot for not discovering this amazing stuff sooner. there. :)

BASTARD POP

what is it? hmm... at it's height it's an incredibly clever combination of two or more different songs, the more unrelated in genre the better. somehow both hilarious and yet very good music. if you want to see wired's definition, check right here:
http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/11.02/play.html?pg=1

:star: now the goods. my favorite of all so far is this one, DJ lance lockarm's "bring the muzik back", a mix of "pop muzik" by M and "bring the noise" by public enemy, with appearances by ice-t and the beasties. check it out:
http://www.kuci.uci.edu/~brianm/lancelo ... _page.html

and next you have the fine work of dsico:
http://4trak.net/dsico/download.html

three in particular i found more than a little amusing and great listens: (parental lyrics advisory)

:star: "compton magic" - featuring "straight outta compton" by NWA and "magic" by olivia newton-john

:star: "this is missy country" - featuring missy elliot vs work it vs country moog classics

:star: "trailer girls" - featuring "garote de ipanema" by sergio mendez vs "without me" by eminem

(this stuff is pretty left-field and so will not be everyone's cup of tea- you've been warned)

THE POWER OF WINAMP

if you have broadband you have an amazing source of free media via your humble little winamp MP3 player. at some point it caught all the way up with the dreaded REAL player.

next time you have it open, select the MEDIA LIBRARY window (shortcut is ALT-L). then select either RADIO or TV. when you do, the master server will be contacted and all available streams will be shown. right now i get 133 TV feeds and 500 music stations. the TV is a totally mixed bag with some very surprising stuff from around the world. the radio is what you'd expect. i've been having a great time listening to greek, irish and arabic music, as well as the superb psychadelic pop station from the 60's.

oh yeah, gotta thank my buddy
noderunner, the tron lightcycle
legend, for prying open my eyes and
making sure they stay that way: :D

------------------------------------------------------------------

FW55, if you are reading this, did you try the station technicolor web of sound? they have a matching web address it seems at techwebsound.com... so far the playlist has been matchless- i'm in total heaven here... :D

EDIT: they even play the old band-endorsed radio commercials and station ads from the 60's... amazing!

Thanks for the site Technicolor Web. Sounds good, checking it out now. Tried Winamp3 Media Library but it crashes everytime I open the media library. Have to get that part working. Think I will have to reinstall it, after I listen to the radio. I listen to one web radio a lot, one that Rudeboy gave me. A Zappa one that allways plays a full LP.

Oh! Clockwork Orange must see it again one day.

FW mentioned elsewhere that he's had problems with winamp media library crashing (what OS?), which raises a couple Q's for me:

is winamp the only way to get access to this network of streams? AFAIK it's using some kind broadcast system called SHOUTCAST, so perhaps there is a sourceforge project which can receive shoutcast...?

haven't tried streamripper yet to grab content... one day...

there is a shoutcast open source clone called icecast (if i remember correctly it is http://www.icecast.org ) *will check in preview*

however! this is just for replacing shoutcast servers with icecast servers, you still need a media player who can use shoutcast/icecast streams.

winamp is best for windoze boxes imo (it's even available for *nix now if i'm not mistaken) but *nix has a pletora of media players who should be able to give you the same feel (at least XMMS does).

if having winamp problems try reading and asking at the winamp forums (i've encountered studio.c error messages with winamp and that's usually due to particular skins not being totally kosher - find an update of the skin or choose another one if that's your problem)

*crosses fingers and hopes this solves your problem or points in the right direction* :D

I investigated the method of getting this working on linux/unix/FreeBSD etc

to get it working install from source the following
libogg and libvorbis from http://www.vorbis.com/
xmms from www.xmms.org/

add an octed to your favourite web explorer (mozilla in my case)
application/ogg
point it to xmms

go to www.flashfm.fr and listen to some french dance music lol, I am
www.icecast.org has some links

I have to say the quality is fantastic for the low bit rate (48 kbit at the moment)
