i hate the idea of marketing
imagine a bunch of people coming together
to set up various strategies
which results in a social effect
equivalent to what a marketing team might do
this collection of individuals
will work like the technical developers of the game
but instead of computers and code as their medium
they will work with teams, clans and players
their job is to
1
advertise the game to people who have never played before
2
ensure the new-player entry is welcoming
3
facilitate team-formation and regular play
4
organise regular tournaments
5
ensure that experienced players and good play are highlighted
anyone can volunteer
though there are various qualifications which might be useful:
1
take the interests of game-play as paramount
2
an ability to communicate with others
that is
regard their own ideas with a certain amount of detachment
so that the best ideas are realised
3
possess vision with a dedication to future-proofing
seeing beyond what we have currently
and bringing into place a system which all players in the future will be happy with
the group will work together
running parallel to the development team
and
for the sake of fun
we can call this the Amazed Collective
(
marketing is too much like targeting and weapons
whereas
a-maze-d has more appropriate associations
)
two things:
1
anyone interested?
2
anyone object strongly to this?

no takers?
no-one interested?
weird
some of my friends suggested that there should be prizemoney
in order to excite player participation
but
i countered with my idealistic idea about 1M players
http://wiki.armagetronad.net/index.php/Tronic
last night
the thought of approaching a company to put up the prizemoney
came up again
again
i personally like the idea of redistribution of player entrance fee
no aggregate or big companies or anything outside player participation
however...
has anyone tried approaching a company yet?
how far has anyone got?

player entrance fee? This is a free game, i'm not sure how many people would want to pay to play.
And "redistribution of player entrance fee" sounds like internet gambling which is illegal in some backwards countries like the USA. Don't you think the player base is way too small to even think about sponsorship or playing for money?
my 2 pence.

hmmm
I think the idea of a team to promote the game and get new players in is a good idea. And something that i would be willing to get involved with.
But a fee for playing in a tournement?
i don't know about that. For one i don't think many people would be interested in competing in that. Most play this game for fun. And are not interested in losing or gaining money, just to take a break from life.
Then there is the idea of "sponsorship." What exactly would that intail in order to get the funds required. A logo being placed on a site? or the tournement be named after the sponsor? I don't know to many companies that would be interested in that kind of promotion. Nor do i think there would be many tron players interested.
About the redistrubution of the prize. Would it be like the winning person/team gets all the prize money? or would it be a percent thing? like the winner gets 50% 2nd place gets 25% 3rd gets 12.5% and so on.
I like the original idea however. A team to promote the game might be useful in getting newer blood in game.

know anyone else?
that's why i play...EagleEye wrote: Most play this game for fun.
i just want more players and better games
like the ones in the recent world cup
regarding entrance fee
that was just a way to generate a winning pot
and
it was only meant to be associated with 1,000,000 players
because it sounds crazy

it certainly won't work with 40 players
no realistic idea but...EagleEye wrote: Then there is the idea of "sponsorship." What exactly would that intail in order to get the funds required.
if a company hosted a server
set up some prize money for a competition
and this generated an exciting game environment
i wouldn't object...
is there any point in talking about itEagleEye wrote: About the redistrubution of the prize. Would it be like the winning person/team gets all the prize money? or would it be a percent thing? like the winner gets 50% 2nd place gets 25% 3rd gets 12.5% and so on.
if we don't actually have prize money...?
for what it's worth
i think it should be a combination of how far you get in the competition
and how close you are to the eventual winners...
this should set up some interesting play-off choices
if it is run along self-organising lines

why choose a better team?
thanksEagleEye wrote: I like the original idea however. A team to promote the game might be useful in getting newer blood in game.
and i think it would be useful to get a team together
and discuss things properly
it is too easy for a shallow discussion to occur
a matter of transacting opinions
whereas
to generate a practical working system
we need a more rigourous medium to test out our ideas
just like the developers use us players on the grid to try things out...

thanks phphilippeqc wrote:Sometimes you have to start it up before people join

the trick is to get something going at the player level
there just aren't enough players who see this

thanks again to iceman
and the players in my first fortress games
)
i believe it is a team-effort
which is what the game's about
at least
it is on fortress settings
thanks for the encouragement
