I know I you haven't heard from me for a while...

Post by Revan »

Hey tron players I've been gone for a while and decided to say hello qand ask a few questions about hosting servers

What have I been doing?

Well..

Playing Star Wars Galaxies
And filmmaking!

It's great fun and I can see that the armagetron project has grown alot.

My questions are pretty simple

-Can I pay someone to host a server? (If so what services are there?)

-How does the location of the server affect lag?

-What kind of server would you like to see?

Thanks for the tips :)

Signals can only travel at the speed of light. Say, to travel 10000 km and back, a signal needs about 67 ms. But if you're 10000 great circle km away from someone, you will have a much larger ping. The actual distance traveled by a signal is longer because the communication lines don't follow the shortest path between your computer and the one it's communicating with, and routers (of which there are probably more over a longer distance) need time to process your packet and re-send it and might even drop it. It's also possible that your packet gets corrupted on a low-quality line (again, this is more likely when there is more line to travel over). Lost packets can't be seen in the ping, but they cause serious lag-like problems.

For reference, the radius of the earth is 6378.1 km (according to Google).

My subjective experience is this:

any server in Europe = Add 100ms to my ping (use any server in North America as the base)
Any server in North America = ping ~80
Swampy's server = ping ~100
Any server in my bedroom = ping ~30ms

If I had the bandwidth, I'd do it. If the longterm prospects for such a venture looked good to me, I'd put up the money to get the bandwidth and the fancy server.

Sorry. Neither of these is the case.

this page http://forums.armagetronad.net/viewtopi ... 4361#54361 could give you some basic idea about commercial hosting (non web).

Googling for virtual server hosting might give you some start points.
Then I'd use the fact that North-American only have a monthly fee for their phone bill, rather than a montly fee + a per minute fee for Europeans, and call a few of them.

So what exactly is a vServer? Are there any American offers out there?

basically, its like cutting a real server into many virtual ones. So you have your own resources, and the other vservers should not affect yours.

Probably.

I see. That's pretty cool! So is this a good deal on a vServer?

-basic such as possible prices, such as from 5 to 10 Euros.
-basic such as required bandwidth for a popular server,

ok, the 29,95 one seems to be the real deal, but a bit shy on the bandwidth, and at what I'd consider a stiff price. But then I havent searched the market beside z-man's suggestions that are at 5 Euros.
The second one seems to be only web hosting, even though the web server APPEARS to use a similar technology as vserver. Id suggest a quick google on the topic to help you read through the marketing material.

Good luck
