To get back to improving people's game, not that Buddhism is such a bad topic.... Here's a couple of my general rules i find myself using and occasionally breaking :P

Never takes someone's grinding challenge when they have clearly left themselves room to 180
Ride the outside of the action, grinding most of the way, after the start up. When it gets crowded you will often box in people who were looking for quick kills.
Set people up for 180s, most players will let their ego play too big of a role in their playing
For closer grinds, just 180 everything, they don't have to be too tight, but they usually help. Of course that's a high ping player talking.
After some dies, check to see if their wall will lead to an easy box in when it disappears on an unsuspecting opponent.
Use your brakes, they're good for you
Set up a local game with the settings of your favorite server and add about 10 comps in a small arena with infinite walls to work on your skills in confined areas.
Watch for which players are outgrinding everyone, don't push your luck.
If someone is boxing you in, but they haven't sealed off anything yet, change directions and go the opposite way to avoid it.
Realize that the starting positions for the bikes are not completely random, you cannot turn immediately and be able to cut off someone next to you.
Finally, I'm going to have to agree with Digital Logic and say, use your glance keys all the time. You have to know when someone is coming up on you.

Watch other players

Post by Android »

A good habit to improve your game is to watch others after you die, especially the leader/one who boxed you. Switch between the remaining players to get a feel for how they deal with different situations. It can be insightful to see the game through another's eyes and you may learn new strategies for dealing with different situations.

And, I agree you should constantly be glancing around you, over your shoulder and to the left and right like a paranoid individual who is convinced he is being followed. I changed my key setup to include the brake as the up arrow key so I can easily glance without endangering my chances of using an emergency brake.

I try to pick a color that is not being used so I can easily tell if the trail I see is mine or not. It makes it easier to avoid be snuck up on.

Finally, take note of situations that occur on the grid and exploit them to your advantage. For example, a common occurence is a long tunnel being created close to a wall. It can be very tempting for others to try a sneak attack on you by running this tunnel. So, you anticipate that. Leave the tunnel open, and turn back along the outside to lure the opponent in, then, quickly turn back and cut off the tunnel.

wow, some great info here... in particular, that last android tip was really the first thing i got good at in the game. i made a living off that until i eventually realised i was only scratching the surface of the game...

another good technique i found surprisingly effective was right off the break* simply crossing from one end of the arena to the other, staying somewhere in the center. it's amazing how many kills that would pick up, altho in retrospect they were probably newbie kills.

Going all the way across is a nice way to mix things up a bit. It can increase your kills because you are extending your trail across the multiple mini battles that are taking place, increasing the possibility that some of those battles will end on your trail. However, this can be a dangerous manuever if there are many other players; I have occassionally ended up stuck in the middle in a box of many colors. :)

Another good trick is to try to surprise opponents from another battle. Sometimes they can be so focused on each other that you can cut off and blindside one or both. A common way I do this is when the opponents are side by side, racing toward a wall, but losing speed and there is a tunnel that is perpendicular, allowing you to suddenly appear out of nowhere.

I just had a thought...oooh ouch.

I will not offer any advice or strategy to anyone.
When I try to attack someone, I don't want them to have an idea of what I will do.
Although, even if they have played long enough to have understood the reactions of an attack or counter attack, I want my opponent on their toes and then in my wall.
Besides, who will even be thinking about your 'guidelines' in this topic as they are cussing up a storm after being coredumped by a chat bot.
I thank you all who have opened there gates to strategy. I look forward to invasion.

They may have just been baiting the hook. You might just find yourself being reeled in!

Well, thanks for the heads up. I re-read what I wrote several times. I realize I may have let them know that I know what they know and I might try to use thier ideas against them... but then again... my head hurts... :|

It's the poison; I poisoned both cups.
Luckily, I have built up a tolerance.
