It depends on the servers' settings, if they're all at default values, all previous versions from 0.2.5.2 onward are fully compatible with 0.2.8.1. The server admin is informed of compatibility restrictions and what settings cause them, so you can be pretty sure that you couldn't enjoy playing on those servers you can't connect to.
I can connect to that one using 0.2.7.1 just fine, only some rubber tweaks are active there that 0.2.7.1 does not understand. I get tons of compatibility warning messages, of course, which is annoying, but everything seems to work fine afterwards.
If you're using something earlier, you're out of luck: CYCLE_RUBBER_SPEED has been modified, and that probably means MB wants to lock out clients with the framerate dependant rubber code bug. You can try to persuade him to set add
to the configuration, but its absense probably is intentional.

CYCLE_RUBBER_SPEED_OVERRIDE 0The only reason for 0.2.7.1 sometimes being compatible and sometimes not that I can see would be MB experimenting with settings and making them incompatible with 0.2.7.1 from time to time. Or the servers on the PC randomly changing ports; there are several. If it's really not random, but user based, maybe it's one of MBC's IP range bans? They're known to cause problems from time to time.
Perhaps it would be a good idea to add a "Don't change settings that make the server incompatible with clients version X" option? But then again, we already have the compatibility warnings.
