Possible Competition Idea

Post by gnorty »

<preamble>First of all, I would like to point out that this is the very germ of an idea which I think would sit nicely alongside the "Spoon" Series. I have no desire to tread on any toes, and think that this idea would complement and likely increase interest in the "Spoon" games. If anyone feels that this would NOT be the case, PLEASE let me know by following up.</preamble>

I started off making a post on the spoon thread, about some ideas improving the format. As I did so, I realised I was moving towards a totally different competition format, that I think would work quite well. I outline the idea here for general discussion/abuse. If well received, I may use this as the basis of a college project.

My idea is for a league event, along the lines of football (soccer) leagues. The league will be comprised of several divisions, and will be played over "seasons" of 1 month.

Each division comprises 3 teams. Each team plays the other 2 teams twice in a season. The match format and server will be the choice of the "home" side for a particular match. Matches may be fortress style, classic teamplay, even single player mode where the round winner's team is deemed the winner. Any format that results in 3 clear results would be acceptable. Matches unplayed at the end of the month would result in zero scores for BOTH teams.

The only requirement is that each match comprises of 3 rounds, the result of which is unambiguous (ie a clear winning team emerges from each round). 1 point will be awarded for each round won in a match, allowing teams therefore to score a maximum of 3 league points from a single match.

As each season is concluded, the top and bottom teams move up and down the divisions respectively.

benefits:

The teams are small, allowing easy match organisation.
Teams play on a variety of server style, allowing a more rounded skillset to be built.
Relatively short seasons maintain interest.
After initial settlement, teams will be paired with others of similar skill levels.
Competition format lends itself to high degree of automation.
Teams would be able to join after the start (at a new season) or drop out without upsetting the format.
Home/Away Matches allow two fixtures to be played in a single session if desired.

disadvatages:

Smaller teams mean less sophisticated teamplay options.
Varied servers mean less opportunity/benefit to build specialist skills. Also some players may actively dislike certain server styles.
probably more....

Sorry it is a long post, I wanted to give a good picture of my idea. Any thoughts gladly received.

There's two things, straight off the bat.

1. Time!

2. Upper and Lower Division.

I think everyone in the spoon now sees the immense prblems with time.
Time sucks, and waits for no tronner, no matter how crazy, so the divisions would have to be further divided, hopefully between geographic areas.

Now i'm all for a soccer style thing, and i think that system is very nice, but the problem is that it works because of the sheer bulk of teams and players, which we don't have, frankly.

That's all i have to say for now.

P.S. the post was nice, not TOO long.
