It's not a guy doing it- it's a spam bot.

It has been happening for the last 2 or so weeks (maybe more). Maybe phpbb has a captcha system for registration Tank could install.

I've been playing around with phpbb version 2.0.19 and it does have captcha as an option.

these bots have been registering on 1000's of phpbb forums and I think they are waiting to make a mass exploit when the next phpbb security warning is announced

I read that story, too. I think someone just commissioned to spam more forums.

I wouldn't be so against upgrading if I wouldn't have to mod the source for all the mods that are already installed again as this install has gotten too hacked up to do so easily, and I only upgrade with the gravest reluctance.

Well, it's you who has to delete all the spam posts, so your choice. Upgrade and have a big heap of work once, or don't upgrade and have a small heap of work every day. Me, I'm proactively lazy. I'll do anything so I don't have to do even the smallest amount of tedious work regularly :)

To be proactively lazy would require several hours of phpbb modding. I'll just be lazy lazy, thank you very much :).

Ah, I really don't see any noticeable mods. There is the theme, but that doesn't require hacking away at source (right?).

No, but attachments, flags, to name two, are not standard.
