The only valid excuses, in my mind, are things like "I just woke up" or "I haven't warmed up yet" or "I'm just having an off day". Of course, an argument can be made that those aren't excuses, they're valid reasons for sucking.

Otherwise, all excuses are equally lame in my mind. The more creative ones are funnier than the not-creative ones, for example "My kid just unplugged my network connection" for a player that is known to play wireless and doesn't have any kids would be pretty entertaining. :)

You have to account for the different types of excuses, too. There are those dealing with oneself, those dealing with another player, and those dealing with something external (which includes lag, framerate getting killed [by IRC, perhaps ], kids pulling out networking cables, etc.).

In the first instance, it's usually a matter of someone blaming himself for a mistake. "I did such-and-such and therefore messed up." If it's true, or there's no reason to disbelieve it (spite or self-righteousness doesn't count), I'm curious how one admitting his own mistakes is lame. I'm especially curious how it's equally as lame as completely making something up for an excuse. Please don't tell me it's some "personal responsibility" ethic.

As for the other two types, face it: sometimes it is legitimate, particularly in the last instance. In these cases, like the first, it's explanation, not necessarily excuse. It's just a matter of judging the individual and the claim as to the liklihood of it being true.

However, if the claim, whatever the sort, is easily remedied, yet the claimant does not remedy it, then that is rather lame, in its own way.

Oh, there's also a fourth type: those where the person is simply confused—blaming one thing when it was actually another. Those can be annoying, especially when you've explained what it actually is and they deny it to try to save face or whatever.

Eh, whatever. Yeah, illegitmate excuses are made. Some wankers repeat them over and over again. Some have one for every time they're cored. They're dorks. Sometimes it's funny. Sometimes it's annoying. It's a video game.

By the way, I agree with Fonkay. I find that a significant discrepancy in ping, whichever the direction, can be a "challenge." And I personally tend to have more difficulty when my ping is significantly lower than another's.

And I do find amusing the sort Sab referenced:
"You think you're so good. I could beat you easily. I'm just toying with you. I'm not even trying."
OK, but I think you're lying.
"Alright, it's on noob! I'm gonna own you LOL!"
Nothing changed.

/me tosses some water on the fire.

I'm so used to playing with a low ping because I usually play on my own servers (when I do play) that high ping servers can really throw me off.

Jeez
what a question
i mean I don't know what an oscilloscope is. Thankfully i have an unabridged dictionary, so i don't have to look in wikipedia :)
olliscope
hehe
sounds like something out of tony hawk. Like Tony Hawk: NASA
and there's a observatory called the Olliscope
and the point is to Olli off the oliiscope to the... moon...
ok
yea that makes very little sense, but hey. Just to say i'ma call you Olli for the hell of it.

oh yea and dylan, Vertigo's right about the posting process. THINK!
And if you can't spell oscilloscope, then just copypaste it!

copypaste. I'm going to email websters about that one. I think copypaste could save time from saying copy and paste. You know, Orwellian style. Dylan! Doublequick copypaste scopename!
doublegoodthink!

I actually have an oscilloscope at my house. They're rather fun to play with and are pretty great tools if you're working with vacuum tube amplifiers so you can pick up interference.

Dylan, not to bust your balls (for the lack of a better term, I'm really really ill right now) but something tells me that your time on the armagetron boards are going to a learning experience of what not to tell people rather than anything fun. Please think before you respond or post about anything. This is not the place to let your ego run wild and free. Not to mention picking a fight with oscilloscope is not the smartest thing you could ever do because you're pretty much assured a lose, and it won't be him losing. Especially when instead of responding with anything smart with his response to excuses you just say "You type alot" which shows your attention span isn't exactly sky scrapingly high. You don't stand much of a chance with that.

FTR. I assume you have a word processor on your computer. Spell check saves lives budd. Good luck.

Haha. Someone in my school once accidently put a 1000 Volt current through one and broke it. Not sure what kind of experiment, but he wanted to do something with static electricity. Pretty stupid situation to be in :P

I've got to play around with one, they're pretty interesting :)
