Online Players
Checking with the master server and my lan browser as I write this, approximately 1/3 of all online Armagetron players that are playing on master server listed servers (that I can access) are being hosted by me. Approx 20 (it varies) of approx 60 total. It sort of boggles my mind. What worries me is that this is starting to take up substantial ammounts of bandwith
. Opinions?

here's an absurd suggestion:
if you made lots of money from donations
get one of your trusted dev friends to buy and host etc it...
like iceman
i wouldn't mind helping iceman to set up a competition
charge people a bit of cash
winners walk away with some
and the rest is used for...
more games
more fun!!!

Another idea in the mix that might not at all address the problem at hand:
Sometimes I'm sadden because I would like to play on a specific server, but my pings are horribly wrong, ruining the experience. Then I see the number of people that are willing to set up a server, but that maybe arent that interested in the whole organisation, configuration, administration and eternal tweaking of the setting, and wonder if we could not make good use of what they are willing to provide without requirering them to be master of all tasks.
What if we changed a bit our taboo about cloning settings. What if we actively promoted the direct cloning of servers from interested admin, as long as the clone would a) follow to the letter the settings of the original and b) be hosted on a different continent. What would be wrong with having 3 "Dance of the cat", the Japaness original, an European and a North-American? What about having Luciver and co's *land (1) available to the European public? Not everybody has the resources that Tank has, but 4 gentle north-american could bring the Tigers Network full experience to their compatriots.
Also, Isn't MicroBusCity a commercial ISP/hosting provider? Maybe you could ask them to host a north american clone of Tiger Networks servers. Maybe CoffeeTeeCat has a friend who would like to the same thing in Japan?
Tank: Does Telia/comhem/what ever charge you for trafic??? Is AA and the servers generating that much, or is it combined with certain download that always come in 750megs or 2.4 gigs? ;)

1) I just hope I've tracked the last name changes right ;) Sorry otherwise.

Interesting idea z-man, but required a client modification too. iceman, nice of you to offer, but I haven't reached that level of desparity yet. More money, helps me in almost no way. That is, until I arrive at having $60-100/month to pay for dedicated hosting. You've got an idea there philippeqc. We could create a distributed tron server hosting matrix. Have it be dynamic and automatic. People who want to host tron servers run a certain application. It talks to a master server. The master server keeps track of what servers are being hosted where. On the addition of a new server, it knows the continent and how many resources are available, and would automatically redistribute server load accordingly. Downloading, setup, etc., would be taken care of by the server matrix coordination application. The downside is that this would be a pain to write.
Really, I don't think so much of my bandwith is used by the tron servers them selves, but by the combination of all things hosted. That includes the main aa.net site, which is currently a 300 000 hit/month site with 120-200MB of traffic a day. An average of about 13kbps, but it's really with spikes, which come during the peak hours of 1800-0000 hours local time. Then there's my personal website, the stats page, tidbits linked to by the forums, etc.
To top it off I'll probably be taking over the hosting of another site like aa.net. That's rather than seeing the site disappear.
As for my connection itself. It's Telia 8000, which is 8mbit/800kbit down/up. It's charged monthly and is for unlimited transfer. And, believe it or not (because I doubt anyone will believe me) but there aren't any other downloads that com in 750mb/2.4gb. There is the occaisonal download of source code for gentoo emerge, but that's not that big. The majority of my connection is actually used by people other than me. It's freaky.

We have a taboo about cloning settings? I wasn't aware of that...

Just as a clarification, MicroBusCity rents a server, using donations,
from AntiX, who runs a master server for Arma, along with running
distortgaming.com. But if the server cloning ends up being
acceptable, I could try to see what I/we could do. MBC has also
increased in popularity, and until recently had a clone in
Germany. I find there are a few Arma players out there who will
run servers, cloning servers that they like to play on.

Who, me?KamP wrote:Well, it is true... set of servers sponsored by ArmagetronAd, paid for by donations would be good, most likely.
Be like socialist Tron. Communist stopped playing right?
I'm a lurker now. RL hates me.
I'll try to drop in on servers every now and then to chat though, but I'm way out of practice and haven't learned to take advantage of any new Armagetron features.
But yeah, first peep you guys have heard out of me in years!

Haha. I know, I probably play like a n00b now even though I'm supposed to be a gray-haired, white-bearded, senile oldbie.Raoul Duke wrote:lol, "LURK MOAR NOOB" -anonymous.
Speaking of oldbies, where can I find them these days (i.e. which server)? You know, subby, nodey, borg, nicolas, ketchup, monkey, free50something, and the rest of the armagoshdarn crew (no offense if I didn't remember your name here).
And woah, I had an armagetron site back in the day? All I get are penis enlargement ads when I click the link in my sig now, sad sad sad.
P.S. Z is still alive too, though I bet you haven't seen him in eons either.
