Heh, surprise is good, but surprising the goalie outside his zone isn't any better than him seeing you come in. You have to get in, and most goalies can be surprised with a good torpedo. (but just a torpedo isn't good enough anymore, you have to hit it in his blind spot, and with different cameras and stuff, the blind spot is different for each goalie, not to mention some of us check who's coming and watch for <my name> core dumped <one of the incoming enemies> and recognize that as a hole attack)

OK, everybody start reading their console during play. It's like driving a car, or riding a real motorcycle. You check your gauges, your mirrors, and keep looking around. You have to. Keep track of roughly who's your defensive team, and definitely know who your goalie is. When you see your goalie die, get to a place immediately where you can see if they need help.

i definitely use my mirrors
especially when i am in cockpit view
however
i have never been able to make use of the rubber gauge in fortress
it is more a feeling thing
which is why
it takes me a little while to accustomise myself to it every game
any suggestions on how to improve this....?
hold the line

/team I'm a torpedo!
The problem is that the call gets ignored. There are other problems. Since goalies are generally wary of holes these days, you can't just stake out a place near the zone and go back and forth waiting for someone to set up. If you do that, he knows you're going to make a hole and where you're going to make it, and he'll defend against it.
So, yeah, I'm in agreement that it doesn't work if you circle around the zone yelling you're going to make a hole. And from the time it's decided to when it's done, has to be quick.
I think it's better to decide as you're approaching the zone what you're going to do, and I'm considering making some more chats for that. LIke garisimo has, you know?
