You didn't see it in its messiest state (that's five seconds before I run rm -rf ~/Desktop/* after saving all stuff that looks like it's worth to keep)
Thing is that my real- life Desktop looks similar and I use a similar procedure to clean it... Although I never put a trash bin on my real- life desktop.

Just changed it up a bit. On the top-right is still the kicker with k-menu, panel buttons, pager, and systray. Top left is a KasBar, replaces the taskbar. Bottom left is a big pager.
Currently experimenting with trying to get KDE to start with a hidden kicker and superkaramba, thinking about hacking up an interface that breaks free from the stupid desktop metaphor we've been using since I was a kid. (Or for some of you DOS people who always were a little slow, since I was a teenager) Yeah, so Plasma in KDE4 is supposed to roll kdesktop, kicker, and superkaramba all together, but I don't really want to wait. That's at least a couple of years away still, KDE4 is supposed to have a "technology demonstration" at the end of the year. Actual release is waaaaaay out.

BlackBox on Windows, picture shrunk 50% not to waste space and protect the innocent hehe. No desktop icons as I don't think it serves any real purpose (if I use something a lot I put it two clicks away in a menu instead, or give it a hotkey, or give the location containing it a hotkey).
And hello everybody, might start playng again when the final 2.8 release is out if any armagoshdarn-like gameplay and servers still exist
Completely offtopic recommended reading (and thinking): http://www.catb.org/~esr/aim/
