Tank, if I remember correctly, it has the ability to be switched from grayscale to color... was on Slashdot a long time ago.

It's a cool project, definitely worthwile.
And I want one :) Perhaps they'll offer sponsorships where, if you finance some of them for the poor, you get one, too :)

If I recall correctly, this laptop runs Linux. :) It was designed that way, wasn't it?

Yeah, it's a cool project to get laptops into developing nations, it's kinda too bad it's not so obvious how useful these things would be for us in developed nations. Maybe I'm just going to have to break down and buy a new PDA and get a keyboard attachment, it would be a lot more convenient than using this 7 pound laptop that only has about 2 hours of battery life to take notes in 4 hours worth of classes a day (I have to sit on the wall in one class so I can plug in to the wall).

It would also be nice to get one of these so we can get armagetron to run on it. Developing nations need armagetron, of course. :)

The hand crank is what is making it for me.

As soon as grep is ported to the paper platform, I'll be happy to. However, I type about 3 times faster than I write--on a bad day. I can take down almost every word the instructor says while typing, but my hand-written notes are usually worthless. (Need I add that for a small investment, I can also record the entire lecture, and if I really want to go that extra mile, I can take a webcam and get visuals of the whole thing)

I was only teasing. You do what works for you. For me that was pen and paper, and should I ever be fortunate enough to return to university (again), I expect I'll still use my trusty black Uni-Ball pen and college-rule spiral notebook. Plus, and most importantly, how would I doodle with a laptop?

I can write a lot faster that I type (i'm working on that...), but the less time I take to write, the more time I require to read. and, in German tests at school, the mark falls exponentially with rising writing speed (makes sence ?). I'm longing for laptops at school. Now, even if I had one I could reasonably use at school, I bet I wouldn't be allowed to use it, even if I had a printer attached...

edit: will replacing emacs with vi increase my programming speed ?

like oxfam's
buy a goat for christmas programme -
why don't people order their's
and at the same time pay for a few others:
this might generate a reasonable amount of funds globally
hold the line
