adsl pro's and con's

Pro's: I have fast web browsing/downloads and reasonable uploads

Con's: I cannot play armagetron because the adsl uses way too much cpu resources on my 450mhz pc causing major fps problems, jerky game play and screen freeze

I have a 900mhz pc which runs the adsl fine but due to crap on board graphics and a bios that doesnt allow it to be disabled I cannot play on that either

I'll be off the grid for a long while until I can find another cheap pc that has reasonable speed and graphics

CPU load? My ADSL connection is handled by the 266 Mhz laptop that also hosts the master server with no noticeable CPU load. It is using the silly PPP over Ethernet protocol.

Have you tied connection sharing? Use the PC with the fast CPU to connect to the internet and share the connection with the PC with good graphics?

Somehow this also got me wondering which in general has less (final) lag (if so), and for what reasons, cable or (A)DSL?

Before adsl I had a steady 78-80% free cpu but now its more like 50-56%

I'm not sure whats causing such a load, I'll have to look deeply into this problem

Iceman, you could set another machine up as a router, that would be ok, or would just going out and buying yourself an external adsl router be a better option?

Obviously your cpu load will be affected, the reason being that your processor is doing all the work routing packets, its an internal modem, so i guess its all driven by software, although im not sure it should be causing that much load... but it wouldn’t surprise me.

Maybe reason that your cpu load isn’t high is because the modem is handling the work, as in maybe it isn’t driven by software.

its an external usb modem, I dont have an ethernet port on either pc so Im stuck with usb unless I buy a ethernet card

i'll runs some tests on this thing, im fairly sure its a driver problem
