That's why I bookmarked the link to show new posts and stuck it on my toolbar. My default page is still the same one Mandriva set when I installed it. :)

Yes, use this link.

My default page is blank.

You could log out when you leave (or set it to not auto login). Then you could just login when you want to check out the site. That seems like the easiest solution.

the problem I have with all phpbb forums is that if I dont read every new post (in some forums this is in the 1,000s) before logging out then next time when I log in the new posts are gone :(

being a dialup user doesnt give me the option to never logout so im always losing new posts :(

There's a plugin to fix this, it lets you read unread posts. phpBB already tracks posts you've read and not read, but for some reason they didn't see the need to include this particular feature in the core even though it's a long standing tradition of old-style dial-up BBSes (FidoNET) and the early telnet-run BBSes (some of which are still around).

Sounds like a feature I would like installed here, too :)
I always use the new posts link, and then open all the new posts in new tabs, hoping I can read them later.

Um, I type "forums" in my address field, which then auto-completes from my bookmarks (my bookmarks bar is full). Then I log in, which then goes to the index page. Then I open in a tab a forum marked with the red cycle and the orange document thing, indicating a new post. Then I close the tab. Then I move on to the next, rinse, repeat. Then I reload the index page to see if there are any new posts since I logged in. Rinse, repeat if necessary. Then I log out.

As far as I can tell I've never missed a new post. ::shrug::
