It's not the signature, but the user info on the left.

What's wrong with this one?

I'll tell you. It's the large avatars that are causing the cell on the left to expand, combined with the short posts on the right. So the cell on the left is setting the height of the row, making it appear there's a lot of whitespace in the signature.

Probably, but now that I have noticed it—it is kinda annoying.

nemo: I did the same yesterday, but I removed it immediately because I hosted it on the computer I'm typing this on (according to my access log I was fast enough).

the sigs are top justified and displayed directly below the message body so if the avatar/info is vertically larger than the message/sig then you will see extra white space below the sig, to fix this the sig should be bottom justified but that would requires a change to the phpbb code. and yes its always been that way.

Btw, 'bottoming' the sig leaves the same amount of unused space.

Yeah, just hides it. I don't know of a way to get rid of it, not without either making more whitespace in other places or moving stuff around so that there's less actual space for the posts. Since the whitespace is really just space that is available for posts that isn't always used, I'd just as soon keep it around.

(And since nemo brought it up, I've noticed it doesn't irritate me)

Edit: I take it back, I do know how to get rid of it. Put the user info that's on the left into a box and float: left; it. Then the post will just grow around that box, using only the amount of space it needs.

That won't completely get rid of it in the case of really small posts and really large user info boxes, though.
