Fortress variant: Revenge

Post by vov »

Here's another fortress topic, but not filled with discussion but an addition/variant to the game. I've not seen it before, though it might have been done already.
I'm talking about allowing the team that just lost their zone to get some revenge.
After being conquered, the zone will take 20 seconds* to collapse. Then their cycles will explode.
They can use that time to get the other zone for zone points and killing as many enemies as possible.

Wanna try it? I've got it set up on orion's server under the name "Fortress Revenge" currently.
Also the RINCLUDE for your own servers and/or LANs:

Code: Select all

rinclude games/fort/revenge_v1(http://www.trontimes.tk/repository/files/games/fort/revenge_v1.cfg)
* 20 seconds is my guess of what would make sense here. Might be tweaked, it's one setting and well explained in the .cfg file!

P.S. Thanks again Z-Man for fixing the collapse_speed thing on v0.4!

P.P.S. Tourney for this maybe?

Haven't seen anyone play on the server yet, but sure, we can give it a try when we do. :-)
If you wanna test it yourself, the only change compared to the file in the OP would be

Code: Select all

fortress_collapse_speed 0.0083 # 1/T with T=120

We'll try it on your server, and I'll be there as soon as I have a chance (tomorrow evening is likely).

First we have to try the 20 second thing. With any luck, we'll get a good game going and get to try several choices.

We just played a game of this on Nate's server, thanks for letting us try it out!
It worked fine, we had to explain to people how it worked first, and then we had a blast. We just didn't get to try other timings because they were all like "noooo 20sec is good!" and I didn't have admin anymore. I still do want to try other time settings too though.

What it seems to need as well for someone who puts up a server with this is explain it (examples below).

Code: Select all

MESSAGE_OF_DAY They just captured your zone? Get revenge!\nYou get 20 seconds till you die, make it count.
SERVER_OPTIONS They just captured your zone? Get revenge!
Otherwise people might get confused and RQ like Magi :?

That wasn't me, in the settings file it explicitly states ACCESS_LEVEL_PLAY 20 (open for all) since it is made to be rincluded at any time even if there was non-open (tournament) settings preceding it.
Might be that I did not have the required access level to change it (rincluded it as admin (1) and maybe that setting needs owner (0)). Or it was changed back by someone else.

Edit: I have since taken this out to go with the policy of Don't Touch This instead.

Ah. I joined the server and gave it a go; the first message I got was the "You must be logged in to play."

I did enjoy the concept, though! Keep it up :D

Bump for visibility (c'mon let's try this out more) as well as an alternative rinclude that doesn't mess with any other settings you might want on your server such as team settings (yay), or access restrictions (boo).

"Patch" version (to rinclude on a fort server to just add the core "revenge" mechanic):

Code: Select all

rinclude games/fort/revenge_p1(http://www.trontimes.tk/repository/files/games/fort/revenge_p1.cfg)
Full version (to rinclude on any server to change the game to this):

Code: Select all

rinclude games/fort/revenge_v1(http://www.trontimes.tk/repository/files/games/fort/revenge_v1.cfg)
Remember, you can tinker with the "death timer" yourself (it "counts" from the moment you get the 'xx has conquered yys zone' message).

Code: Select all

fortress_collapse_speed = 1/T; examples:

fortress_collapse_speed 0.05    # 20 seconds (default in the files) -> 1/20 = 0.05
fortress_collapse_speed 0.0333 # 30 seconds
fortress_collapse_speed 0.0166 # 60 seconds
fortress_collapse_speed 0.01 # 100 seconds
