Release codenames-- an idea
IIRC, the false gods won the poll (*mutters about how gems were a better idea* =p)
Instead of simply sequencing through them, maybe the feature-based releases should be named in a way after the features?
eg:
0.2.8 = Basic Shaped Arenas = false god of shapes?
0.3 = Authentication & Website = false god of security?
0.4 = World = false god of the world?

Re: Release codenames-- an idea
1.0 The One True God? I'm fine with that, because then 1.0 will be codenamed "Lucifer"Luke-Jr wrote:IIRC, the false gods won the poll (*mutters about how gems were a better idea* =p)

(mutters about how many billions of people have died over the words "false god")

Re: Release codenames-- an idea
Now now Luke, your not very "fair play" there. This topic has been open long enough for you to form any objection at the time. Then the COMMUNITY decided what they liked best.Luke-Jr wrote:IIRC, the false gods won the poll (*mutters about how gems were a better idea* =p)
... not snip, but just to separate both ideas ...

But to come after, say that its not the one you liked, and want to change it all, thats just not very "fair play".
As to naming per big feature, would it be worth it to spend so much time to find the god of "connectors and HUD", or the one of " improved rubber mechanism, third release". It took over a month to pick a sequential list. How much time do you think the community should now spend on renaming each version?
Also, the big big big advantage of a sequential naming mecanism is that ANYONE can make sense of it. I'm sure outside of this forum, there are hundreds of players, well of their times, that just dont want to invest anytime trying to track what is a patch, sub release, major version, minor version and what name associate to them. Instead, they can grab the one that has the highest first letter, and be darn sure about it.

About removing false god names, I agree. Here is a naming scheme that would fix it all:
0.2.8 = Basic Shaped Arenas = Allah
0.3 = Authentication & Website = Allah
0.4 = World = Allah
Canis meus id comedit.

IIRC, the decision was on the false gods. Sure, I complained that gems were a better idea, but did I contest the decision? No.philippeqc wrote:Now now Luke, your not very "fair play" there. HUD isn't a new feature... Connectors could be equated to something similar, such as teleportation or whatever the nearest equivalent would be.philippeqc wrote:As to naming per big feature, would it be worth it to spend so much time to find the god of "connectors and HUD",
Hardly a major feature.philippeqc wrote:or the one of " improved rubber mechanism, third release".
I wasn't aware there was a sequential list other than alphabetic. Either way, it was just an idea.philippeqc wrote:It took over a month to pick a sequential list. How much time do you think the community should now spend on renaming each version?
Eh, or they can use the version numbers. The community even has a way to express these codes in short terms (0260, 0271, 028 beta, etc)philippeqc wrote:Also, the big big big advantage of a sequential naming mecanism is that ANYONE can make sense of it. Huh? I never suggested removing false gods.philippeqc wrote:About removing false god names, I agree.

Except that Allah is a false god also.

A 'false gods' naming scheme would be cool, and seeing, as oscilloscope rightly reminds us,
that all known gods are fake or are not taking gods seriously (z-man), we only need to find
fitting gods. I am no expert on greek, germanic, celtic, skandinavian, slavic or whatever
mythology, I can make no suggestions but one:
when armagetronad supports weather, maybe with sound, the release should be called
'Donar' , a Germanic thunder god. (incidently, the German word for 'thunder' is 'Donner'...
which is proof of his fakeness.)

I do take gods and people's belief in them very seriously, what I'm mocking is just my personal title here on the board. I have respect for a man/woman who says "And This Is What I Believe".
Anyway, to be on topic, I think we should stick to the alphabetic list. In principle, themed codenames would be better and cooler, but then we'd have to go through this annoyingly tedious decision making process every release instead of every time we run out of codenames to use.
Plus, an alphabetic list has the advantage that we know the codename of the release three releases from now and can name our roadmap categories after them. We can move the major feature that would determine the codename of the release freely between releases (instead of moving all minor features between the major releases that switched order).

You should run for President. I bet you get along great with Dubya, seeing's how you both think you're always right and can't be wrong, especially about religion.Luke-Jr wrote:I can't make up my mind whether to ignore this obvious falsehood or not, so I'll just post saying I'm not responding to it.Oscilloscope wrote:All gods are false.
