double posting
Tank, please fix the posting thing; you won't get the screen with click here to view your post, click here to go back to the forum index... Everybody keeps making double posts...
Re: double posting
Or we could all just curb our natural insane tendency to "try the same thing and expect different results". Since when does refreshing a page actually increase the likelihood that a bug will be fixed?Sabarai wrote:Tank, please fix the posting thing; you won't get the screen with click here to view your post, click here to go back to the forum index... I realize I haven't been posting heavily while Tank's mail server is down (which is what the debug messages say), but I haven't had any duplicate posts either.

Well, the other kind of message I get often when posting here are temporary DNS failures that do get "fixed" by reloading. Add to that that normally an errorr message when posting indicates that your post was not completed (thus not posted) makes it quite a natural assumption that just reloading the page (or going back and hitting submit again) is the right thing to try first, because the one thing you don't expect is a double post. Of all the things you can do, it has the best effort to likelyhood of success ratio.
I'm with you z-man.
Sab's comment came after the flood of posts, hence my smart-ass remark.
It does seem to be an intermittent failure, though. Some of my posts get the error message and some of them don't.
Edit: This message didn't get the error message.

The error looked like something failed unexpectedly in the middle, and thus it may or may not have been posted. I'm going to do a test on this thread...z-man wrote:Well, the other kind of message I get often when posting here are temporary DNS failures that do get "fixed" by reloading. What has happened to me follows as follows:
- I type up a post.
- I click submit.
- The loading stalls.
At this point, if I hit esc to stop loading the page, and then click submit again, there will be a double-post. But...if I'm patient, the stall will eventually cease and I get a page informing me there has been a debug error (something to that effect).
- I go back to the index.
- I navigate to the topic to which I just posted.
- The post is there with no doubling.
Without anyone specifying, my presumption is that double-posts are caused by people's lack of patience.

I bookmarked http://guru3.sytes.net/search.php?search_id=newposts
awhile back and stuck it on my browser's toolbar, so to deal with this all I have to do after posting is click that bookmark.
