Explanation of Rubber

Post by Tank Program »

While working on the HUD, adding a rubber display, I have managed to discover what I think is maybe not the most technical explination, but the general concept behind rubber. First, the lower your rubber is the better, the higher the server's rubber the better. As you approach a wall, your rubber increases. You die when your rubber is equal to the server's rubber. However, once your rubber increases, you have to cruise around some to allow your rubber to decrease some. So, if you grind a wall for a wall for a while, your rubber is staying about steady, I don't remember exactly. But it only decreses when you are going towards a wall. It decreases slowly as your cruise. Hope this helps you all in your game. I am not sure of the effect of cycle_ping_rubber, but this does apply to cycle_rubber.

Here's a thought or two -
Sometimes, (I've seen it happen to others as well) I'll grind a wall real close, speed is picking up very fast, I'll get halfways down this LONG STRAIGHT wall and BOOM, It's like I hit something, but nothing was there to hit.
1) Could my rubber value be increasing (decreasing? confused) along that tight grind and finally give out midway? As if I'm on the same plane as the wall I'm grinding.
2) How close can you get to a wall?
3) Can two walls exist on the same equal plane?
4) Does the game shift your wall away from the wall you grind if your too close? (unseen to the naked eye)
5) Does god really exist? Jokin, don't expect you to answer this one. We have several selfproclaimed almighties in this game. LOL, Ones enough.

But seriously, I'm curious about the rubber attributes. Thanks

When you were grinding along the wall like that and you suddenly died, did the camera take you back to where you turned against the wall? If it did, you were a victum of "accrued lag" which is were the lag adds up after several turns, because the server does not have time to correct your position, so your computer is displaying you in the wrong spot. So, when you died it was because your position was corrected by the server.

I believe you can get as close as .1 away from a wall, but it requires very good timing.

Two walls can just be really close to each other, and the game as far as I know, does not move your walls.

I can attest to the "death by grinding" problem. Indeed, it does happen while grinding along a perfectly straight, long wall without you having turned into it to cause the explosion. The camera stays where you exploded, it definitely doesn't appear to be lag. It has happened to me several times, and I have seen it happen to others... or at least have heard them complain about it in wonder. It's a trip.

wow, never had that happen before! :o

also worth note, the basic FAQ gives some kind of figure for the rubber replenishment... think it's fully restored in 10 seconds, not totally sure, tho.

very nice information tank ty :D

i've also experienced the long wall grind explosion thingy, maybe the rubber can lag as well? makes sense that the rubber info message from server could lag enough that your client suddendly gets the "oops you should actually be dead"-message a second or so later - just my 2 cents

Q: what is your purpose in life?
A: to explode of course!

Well, I'll look into the death by grinding, see if I notice anything with that.

Tank, do you know what causes you to sometimes "Lag Invert" as I call it? When you 180, and it slides you to the other side of a wall? Can I get around this so when I 180, I stay on the side closer to the wall?

Pretty much as Maj and 54 confirm, It doesn't seem to have the same lag characteristics as you mentioned, Tank. I know what your talking about, that has happened too. Not to say it couldn't be lag though.

Here's another thought,
Could a snapshot be auto-triggered to record such an event or any other event for that matter. Or how difficult would it be to program a recording/playback function? Like you don't have enough to do already.

Thanks, RK

I don't recall, but I wouldn't expect you to cure all either, even if you could. ( me) Hope Im not sounding like I'm demanding or anything.

this has been discussed in a post elsewhere on "teleportation on purpose", it depends on server rubber settings and the speed of turning and is a feature imo  (great for making superspeedstrips)

here it is (hope link works): http://guru3.sytes.net/viewtopic.php?t=95&highlight=
