Very odd goings on
OK, so the other day I started noticing some jumping in my graphics, almost like a low fps. I paid it no heed at the time because I had several background tasks also running. Today, however, as soon as I opened arma I noticed an odd thudding sound, almost like a helicopter from a distance, coming from my right hand speaker. It coincides with the jumping around, almost exactly. despite this, the fps is over 2000, which is normal. I'm running a deep scan this minute, which I will check when I get back in a few hours, but I don't think I have any problems with malware etc.
I'm running win7 on this PC, five HDD's totalling about 3tb, foxconn 45CM-k with an intel celeron something running at 2.something Ghz. I have an ATI Radeon HD 4850, I'm using the built in sound chipset and I have a 1800W psu.
I'm running the 0.2.8 edition of arma with sty + ct, and I can't think of anything else that is relevant.
I suspect there could be a power issue, but I don't want to go messing around with the machine without some additional theory on the problem since I've spent a good few manhours working on it and building the coolant systems etcetera.
Any ideas?
Edit: Just noticed that when I open arma and the screen goes briefly blank, the thudding stops briefly. It comes back as soon as anything is visible on-screen.

Re: Very odd goings on
I only have this when I'm rendering a video in some video editing or 3d software.

I know nux, I suspect it's not actually 2000 but I always get false readings under Windows. It only really concerns me if it drops below 800, usually it's down to heat.
Any ideas other than the rendering?

Yeah, do what I recommended here:

play a bit with the settings of the card, and if you can't solve it make a debug (aarec, with the Arma recorder) recording and post it.

Aye nux, I mean representational. 800 roughly translates as around 30 to 40 FPS. 2000 equates to about 150 - 200.
Word: Tried a few different things, I think there's something amiss with the power consumption of my graphics card. For some inane reason, it appears to take power from the mobo directly until the appearance of the logon screen. I don't think this is a defect, but it's that switching that seems to be off. The code that tells the card to di so reads something like the following ( Ihave no idea in what language)
Logically, this appears to me that when the card is initially started, it tests the power supply from the PSU, beeps if everything is ok and switches to mobo power.
Also, logically, the above code is gibberish.
I did have a problem with the original control kit for the driver, namely catalyst control centre, where the graphics driver would stop responding completely. It did recover, but I couldn't do anything more intensive than file browsing without said failure. Removal of the catalyst centre fixed the problem.
On a whim, I took a seperate PSU, powered it separately from the PC and pugged it into the graphics card. Running on a separate power supply appears to fix the problem. The issue I have now is that it all needs to be under one "roof" so to put it. The computer won't function on any less than 1200w, on account of the HDD's and other drives, so I plugged the card back into the original PSU and the thudding has miraculously disappeared.
Why then, did the thudding occur in the first place?

Now you've stopped to make sense in a not so funny way.delinquent wrote:Aye nux, I mean representational. 800 roughly translates as around 30 to 40 FPS. 2000 equates to about 150 - 200.

Re: Very odd goings on
You know, I hadn't thought of that. I don't see how that could have become an issue without me altering it mind... I'll go see
Homm.. It's at 75 Hz, but I've tried 60 Hz and no difference. I can't set it to any lower.
Edit: No thudding, but I'm still getting a jumpy screen. It only happens in arma too
