What I am not listening to right now or ever, but apparently most other people are: iTunes Charts. Ninety-eight* songs and they're all vacuous, insipid, uninspired, obnoxious, mindless garbage of the lowest order. The Euros aren't doing any better, as evidenced by their charts.
Devo is real.
* Two exemptions made for "Born in the USA" (which is not what you—or Reagan—think it's about) and Ray Charles's rendition of "America the Beautiful," both of which are only charting because of the date. They'll surely be replaced by more shitty 'EDM' or pop slop in a few days. Lady "manufactured this way" Gaga or the like.
Speaking of Devo, here's a little story, over a month old now. So, I went to look up something about said band using the Google search bar built into Camino. When the results came up, I noticed one of their custom "doodle" logos: I initially thought, "whoa, cool! Do they do that for any search about Devo? Maybe a fan on the staff?" Well, I clicked on it and turned out it was actually Robert Moog's birthday. Neat coincidence all the same. Neater, it's interactive. This and the Pac-Man one, good stuff.

The synth stuff is really cool. When I was looking it up on the day, it was hard to find anything how to really use it. Lots of demonstrations and people goofing off with the doodle. Maybe it's one of those things you really just have to mess around with?
It was still better than trying to find direction on how to properly use an old school midi keyboard.

Yeah, that's half or even most of the fun with the real Moogs, messing around and trying to discover unusual sounds.Tank Program wrote:Maybe it's one of those things you really just have to mess around with?
I've always been mostly averse to synthesizers, especially those trying to mimic the sounds of real instruments. (I also despise samples, loops, and drum machines.) But, in the case of Devo, their use of them figured into their overall concept of devolution. There are other usages I can approve of, but again, if they're replacing actual instruments, forget it. Restrained, unique usage preferred.
So, hey, more Devo, this recent, with gif to accompany. What We Do.

Bluesy Evolution -David Meshow
Obviously not improv, and I have no idea if its blues, but I like it. Also, anyone know what the hell the thing he's sitting on and tapping is? He's known for using household items as instruments, so I originally thought it was just something he found in his house but it sounds too good to not be a legit instrument methinks

I knew what it was before I saw the video; a friend of mine brought one to school before and used is as an alternative to drums, because it would have been hard to bring a whole drum set to music class for a day.

EDIT: If you think that's intriguing.. watch THIS video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AlpTw2sQlw8
And, if at this point you're still interested in what the hell it was (doubt it), here's a video with a guy explaining more about it, and using the same one in that video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u1EmxJjDsmc

A co-worker of mine watches cajon video lessons on youtube on lunch breaks which makes for some rhythmic loosening up.
You can buy a Cajon ready made or as an assembly kit.

Wow...that would be really useful. Not quite the sound I want, but its better than using Hydrogen or Fruity Loops
Thanks for the info

Har. I think I've linked to his "best improvisation ever" video before. Only thing really worthwhile on his channel, but just for the comedy because the music is shite.Clutch wrote:Bluesy Evolution -David MeShow
He would be referring to the solo, not the whole piece. I still wouldn't consider it true improvisation, because I don't think stringing together licks qualifies. But in the common, typically misused parlance among blues-rockers, it would.Obviously not improv
It is a blues. It is not the blues. The fact that you don't realise this, or likely even know what I mean by that, or that almost everything you listen to is based on a blues form, or possibly even care to know any of that.... Grumble grumble sigh.and I have no idea if its blues
Won't play in my region. But, in response to the source: M.T.V. - Get off the Air!saragei wrote:Listening to:

No, let him keep his attitude and continue mimicking songs instead of learning music.
