Re: Saturday Spoon
there was a second round, concord.
Round 1:
3t played mkay's team in ct usa and won
magic's team played dread's team in 3t's server and won
Round 2:
mkay's team played dread's team in the 3t server and won
3t played magic's team in ct usa and won
we assumed 3t won spoon cause we beat magic's team, but no one really knew how the tournament was meant to be held. mkay's team came back after winning in 3t's server and said they would play the losers of our match, and that it was double elimination, but that never happened cause everyone had to leave so idk :O

Re: Saturday Spoon
Good matches everyone. I thought it was going to be double elimination, but I guess the “Round 2” matches we (Mkay's Team) played determined third place.

Re: Saturday Spoon
I think it was a bit long. In the future if it's double elimination there shoild only be one match per pairing. That would be much more time efficient. We could also do something where each team plays the others. So a total of 3 matches, then best records go to finals. Records could be 3-0, 2-1, 1-2, or 0-3. Ties could be played out in a single match.
Either way this should be more clear in the future as to how it's structured.

Re: Saturday Spoon
we'll also probably have more than 4 teams in the future. I think we should stick to single elimination, and do a consolation bracket for the losing teams so everyone gets to play.
It took about 30 min to get teams set, which was about what I expected, but for this investment of time, players should be guaranteed at least 2 bouts (~90min).
it wouldn't be a true spoon if we knew who won!

Re: Saturday Spoon
I might have misunderstood the purpose if this (tbh I didn't do homework in reading wiki). Its not about the winner but almost having a lobby with teams that can challenge others just because they can in a serious, competitive environment. This "lobby" makes it much more dynamic than pickup.
Re: Saturday Spoon
yeah
Re: Saturday Spoon
Exactly. Spoon is like a bridge between Pickup and Ladle. Competitive play. Dynamic teams. Perfect timing for those who want to catch the spirit of serious Fortress but can't make Ladle.Mkay1 wrote:This "lobby" makes it much more dynamic than pickup.
Re: Saturday Spoon
There were initially 24 people who were picked on irc. Then later in the tournament I heard there was something along the lines of 7+ substitutes (I can attest for 5). I can see more participating in the future as people will realize it's fun. I could be wrong but I think the majority of players were American.
I'm just pondering on the team situation. If you make a predisposed team, you certainly have an advantage and will encourage others to make teams as well, thus reducing the point (I think). 3t sort of won. They have increased in skill recently, but realistically aren't close to the top teams of ladles. I just feel like having a team in a wave of others isn't in the best interest of the spoon.
Also the authority issue. We got lucky this time. All teams had team leader in their respective ladle servers. This is another good reason for a global authentication system perhaps. A player can select on their profile they are interested in competing in the spoon and they cam get a specific authority for Ladle servers that lets them invite lock etc. The only issue is abuse in the future. Would it be a pain for server owners to update server Saturday then Saturday night or Sunday morning? I

Re: Saturday Spoon
Well, we all know that any random group of all-stars can give the best team a run for their money. I think it's too early to tell how this is going to turn out, but I don't think we should discourage preexisting teams from joining. This is a great way to try out new relationships and strengthen old ones.Mkay1 wrote:I'm just pondering on the team situation. We can steal the "Super Leader" idea from CTF Brawl. By the way, that Super Leader idea is working out fantastically. There are competitive CTF games a few times a week and for the first time the CTF community is being transformed.Mkay1 wrote:Also the authority issue.
We can keep an authority list on the Spoon page, then add those Super Leaders to the regular Ladle auth.cfg every month. It's not that much more work. Of course, this doesn't help with private servers. Pickup servers have /vote referee, so that should be left as an option too. Actually, using Pickup servers (while seemingly less stable) might prevent the tournament from running too long.
Re: Saturday Spoon
Well, I think you can't call that my team because unfortunately I had to leave in the first match. However, I really like the idea and was a bit surprised how well it worked (considering this was the first spoon).DaGarBBaGeMAN wrote:magic's team played dread's team in 3t's server and won

Re: Saturday Spoon
Hey Concord. I should've probably updated how things went for you before this, but I didn't think about it. Here's how things went down.
Round 1 Match 1 Concord 0 vs. 2 Magic
Round 1 Match 2 3T 2 vs. 1 Mkay
Round 2 Match 1 3T 2 vs. Magic 1
Round 2 Match 2 Concord 1 vs. 2 Mkay (This match I really don't remember the exact score or who won, but I'm *pretty sure* I have this right.)
I've included a couple of screenshots just to give people an idea of how things turned out.
We assumed that we played the first round, then winners played winners. However, I mentioned that I think losers might play against losers, so we went to the other server to wait for it to finish up to bring the losing team back to the server we were in.

Re: Saturday Spoon
Well I see mkay's point here, but rules were not very clear for this tourney. That's precisely why I asked Concord if it were alright for all 3t to be on one team, to which he said yes. It's not even like 3t is a top team, as you pointed out. We just wanted to extra practice before ladle, and we got a fantastic challenge. We weren't even that much better than the other teams, as our match with mkay's team could have really gone either way.
Regardless, this was an amazing idea, and kudos to those who helped organizing it. Can't wait for next month.
P.S. Sorry dread, I wasn't aware of the situation with your team, as we never played you guys. I was just going off the names of the original captains.

Re: Saturday Spoon
I want to emphasize a point: The Spoon is deliberately vague on rules. It is informal and spontaneous. Think of it more like playing street-ball with your friends rather than a formal event. Show up, get on a team (or bring your own), play hard and have fun.DaGarBBaGeMAN wrote:Well I see mkay's point here, but rules were not very clear for this tourney.
