Saturday Spoon

Post by sinewav »

I set up a basic framework for Spoon on Saturdays.

Everything we need is there: Guidelines, Challenge Board, Bracket, Blurb... I think this could be fun with very little effort.

Thanks to whoever put that page there as a placeholder; was that you Concord?

I agree, I will try and organize an rZ team for next weekend if this is going to happen.

I reworked the sign up thing a bit.

I've called it "Sign In." Anyone or any team can sign in, which has no other purpose than to publish a list of people who plan on coming. Signing in is not required to play, it is just a way to signal interest.

I also split the Sign In from the Challenge Board, because they felt awkward to me together. The Challenge Board is something that I really don't see being used until after the event, to record what happened, because if everyone is in IRC, I can't imagine them then going to the wiki as an organizational tool. If a whole team plans to play together, they can add themselves to the bracket beforehand. I'm not sure. It just felt awkward to sign up as an individual player, and then see the bracket, which is such a strong implication about being on a team, it made me as a potential user think about the team selection process (because I am thinking, "how do I go from signing up as an individual, to being on some team that can be on a bracket?"). That process is intrinsically unclear, we don't know how many players, how many captains, or who any of them are, so thinking about that process made me as a user nervous. The bracket was causing me to think about future stages of organization. I think ideally, people sign in or don't, but either way, they don't have to worry about that other stuff.

I wanted it to seem as simple as it is. if you want to play, show up. If you want to publicize that you are coming, sign in.

The CTF Brawl is going to take place this saturday (I'm not playing in it but I think many others are), so this will have to be played on another weekend I suppose.

It's supposed to happen on the Saturday before Ladle. Not every Saturday.

Is that the Saturday in the weekend preceding Ladle Sunday, or the Saturday the day before?

I don't see much joint, as if you're busy for one weekend, you could be without Tron competitions for 2 months.

Couldn't it happen 2 weeks before ladle? Then there's be something every two weeks, and more availabilty for players.

Read this thread. The discussion reveals there are people who want to play on Saturdays, not because they are busy this-or-that weekend, but because they are busy every Sunday (or in the case of Australians, it's Monday morning for them). It's obvious there is generally a fair amount of Fortress activity in the days leading up to Ladle, thus making the day before optimal for improvised tournaments. There doesn't seem to be a strong desire for two Fort tournaments a month, that's why the Spoon is optional. You're free to try and have Spoon on any Saturday you want, or one every day of the week if you so desire.

Idea: I think Spoon can also be 4-way Fort, or Fort Onslaught, or 4v4, or whatever Fort you want -- though authorities would be a problem, so Pickup/Ladle servers are the best choice.

if you want to signal your intent on playing: http://wiki.armagetronad.org/index.php/Spoon/Sign_In

You do not need to sign in, but doing so helps others get a sense of how many people will be coming. Full teams can also sign in to play together.

we'll be meeting in #armagetron.tourneys at 18:30 GMT, 2:30 pm EST. We'll choose captains and draft and get playing.

What do you mean "what is it?" It is an improvised Fort tournament for Saturday players. It's for people who can't play Ladle (for whatever reason). It's for teams that want to practice for Ladle. It's for hardcore Fort players. It's for new people who want to check out the scene. But it relies on people to show up, communicate, and problem solve in real time. Think you can handle that? ;)
