What are you listening to right now?

They're good though. And their looks haven't bothered me at all.

That is not jazz.

Re: What are you listening to right now?
Does the fact that the uploader didn't know that bother you? Are you easily bothered?Phytotron wrote:That is not jazz.
The cover is awesome. It's made from this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fn0khIn2 ... re=related
(ironically, is more "jazz" than the other one in a sense, lol. Not that it matters)
And now I know where Crazy Tronners got the colors for their Open Sumo server. ^^

I absolutely love that game. That along with Link to the Past were the first two games that I beat.

Special "I meant to do that" percussion effect, heh, complete with the subtle "oops" embarrassed scratching of the brow.
... I'll go ahead and be the one to say it: That was great, but I could'a used a little more agogô. I've got a fever, and the only prescription is more agogô!

Genre? Well, that's actually a difficult question. I hope Phytotron takes a minute to post about this because I'd like to hear his interpretation.
Back when the Pixies started there was a kind of explosion of new music. Punk rock had turned the music world on it's ear in the mid 70's and the 80's saw massive branching out of different styles including metal (glam metal / thrash), hardcore, post-punk, new wave (redefined), etc.. * The Pixies would have just been considered "rock", even though they were kind of "surf" too. But music stores in the 80's were really inconsistent with how music was categorized. Usually things were just "Rock," "Jazz," "R&B," "Classical," "Folk," ... you get the point. As the flurry of new music and sounds entered the marketplace, music stores experimented with different sections, dividing pop music from "new music" (with the sub-genres listed above). Eventually, music stores started splitting up rock music into "Pop Rock" (like Foreigner and Kenny Logins) and "Alternative Rock" (which at the time included the Pixies, Jane's Addiction, The Cure, Stone Roses, etc..). This wasn't an overnight thing. The Pixies were probably found in a few different sections under different genres before the public and the record stores collectively agreed on the "Alternative" genre. Then immediately after, "Alternative music" became "Pop music," completely destroying all the hard work that went into coming up with the name in the first place, haha.
Today, I just call the Pixes "Rock."
* Rap, House, and Techno too!

Re: What are you listening to right now?
During the time they were originally active the Pixies were generally considered to be straddling punk, post-punk, and the newly emerging "college rock," which made them cool for everyone concerned. (I guess these days the term might be "crossover appeal."
) They were played a lot on college radio and the like.
Then came that "alternative" label, which was stupid from the beginning since it was a term manufactured by mainstream corporate music, and thus immediately mainstream. (How can something played on MTV and commercial radio be alternative? Alternative to what?) But they got lumped in there, anyhow. I remember some morons also lumped them in with "grunge" (another completely manufactured term) during that period, don't know why; I guess because that loser cited them as an influence. Then the use of "alternative" became sorta archaic, for a time, anyway—it seems to be back to being applied not only retroactively but to new music that's reminiscent of that stuff, which makes it doubly stupid. Then the term "indie" started getting widespread use, first just a catch-all for independent, i.e., non-mainstream music of all sorts, and they got lumped in there. But then somehow "indie" became a genre and sound in itself, which I still don't get. These days there are some who include them in the godawful AAA category, since the kids are all grown-ups with minivans now.
Sinewav's right, back in the day where the Pixies were categorized in a record store would just depend on the record store. You know, record stores, before the ridiculous multi-sub- and slash-genres created by genre mavens on the internets and wikipedia and dumbasses arguing in youtube comments.
At ear X-tacy they were found in the "indie rock" section, which included all kinds of stuff just thrown together; that is, not in the "Pop/Rock" section. In the end, I don't classify them by a genre. I just say it's the Pixies, like Slint. They came to define a sound by and to which other bands that followed were measured and compared.

Oh god, Slint. I've been avoiding the Slint folder on my hard drive because it makes me too moody. I couldn't resist searching the you-tube for Slint and had a WTF moment; 8-Bit Slint.Phytotron wrote:Slint.
...and 8-Bit MBV too? I'm feeling very ambivalent!
